COX is a multidisciplinary practice with studios in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Auckland.

About us

COX acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters of Australia. Our practice is built around designers that collaborate with clients, stakeholders and communities. We are By the Many, For the Many. COX seeks to do more with less, tapping into resourceful Australian culture to build value through ingenuity. We strive for quality through our beliefs in equality and opportunity. We embed culture in our designs, taking time to listen and understand cultural context and social impacts. We continuously seek the brightest minds to innovate design, process, and typology. We welcome collaboration, from both traditional and disruptive sources, should it have the potential to contribute to better design. Our history in Australian architecture began with the transformative Tocal Agricultural College in New South Wales. Epitomising the renowned Sydney School, the project had a deep and sensitive understanding of context and place, blended with honest and expressive structure and craft. This has informed the work of COX since. This history has established key principles we continue to prioritise today. One being the planning of cities and design of buildings that are adaptable to change – cultural, social, technological, and economic. The other is the creation of sustainable spaces – environmental strategies that are embedded, rather than added, to our designs. Today we work across Australasia and the globe on projects of international significance. Our team brings experience and enthusiasm to every new project and client. Our projects demonstrate a dedication to research as well as an ability to work with clients to deliver successful design solutions on time and budget. What we bring to our work transcends design. Our innovative technology and structural design solutions place emphasis and value on the design of core elements. Our structures designed as destinations to bring people together to share experiences that are unique to their time and place

Described as a ‘21st century cathedral,’ the new Sydney Metro Victoria Cross Station is not only a city-shaping transit hub, but an opportunity to corral civic pride and pay tribute to Sydney’s history. So how do you design a project to achieve all that?    According to Project Director David Holm – it’s all about a strong sense of place – blending heritage with nature. Oh, and making sure it’s successful as a world-class transport option too! We sat down with David to learn more about his six-year journey working on the project. The City of Gold Coast has recently reappointed COX to deliver the Masterplan of the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre for the next 20 years, underscoring the success of the original redevelopment. “The proven success of the venue has driven its expansion. We were delighted to learn that it served as a training centre for athletes who brought home four gold and five silver medals at the recent 2024 Paris Olympics. The ongoing goal is to ensure the venue supports both elite athletes and remains a cherished community hub," says COX Director, Richard Coulson. Design is more than just aesthetics—it's about telling stories. Mínima, the latest restaurant by brothers Mork and Benn Ratanakosol, embodies the concept of 'third culture cuisine' fused with the warmth and familiarity of ‘coming to dinner at our place.’ "Mork and Benn described their concept of ‘third culture’ cuisine to us early in the process, and we immediately thought that Mínima could become a ‘third place’ for the neighbourhood and wider community,” says COX Director, Nugroho Utomo. COX worked closely with the brothers to craft the interior design and visual identity for the new space where the brothers’ heritage, experiences and cultural narratives blend in seamlessly with both their cuisine and aesthetics. The $54 million Stage 1 redevelopment of Browne Park is officially underway. With over 130 years of Rugby League tradition, the recent sod-turning ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Central Queensland Rugby League venue. “Browne Park has been at the heart of sport in Rockhampton for over a century. Located on the lands of the Darumbal People, the ground has seen significant contributions from the local Indigenous community to the sport in Rockhampton,” says COX Director, Richard Coulson. “The State’s ambition to create a multi-functional sporting venue for Central Queensland gave us the opportunity to create an exciting design for the people of Rockhampton. The masterplan has the option of further expansion in future stages,” says COX Senior Associate, Bastiaan Kolff. COX, in collaboration with local partner Design+Architecture, are leading the design and delivery with construction by Hutchinson Builders for the Department of Tourism and Sport. Completion is expected for early 2026. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/g4eUr5m9

Attracting and retaining top talent has never been more important than today. With this in mind, Goldfields House embraces the concept of work-life balance through an exceptional working environment, designed to be memorable at every step of the work-day journey. An example is the premium end of trip facilities, an experience likened to a day spa visit that seamlessly integrates both the functional and the luxurious. 21 spacious private bathrooms feature a warm and tactile palette and materiality of mirror, marble, timber and brass accents. Integrated stands for hair dryers and straighteners gently perforate benchtops while ironing stations ensure a polished appearance for the day ahead. Designed by COX and Silver Thomas Hanley (STH), the New Shellharbour Hospital, located on a site rich with cultural significance to the Yuin and Dharawal peoples, is both a major healthcare project and a healing landscape restoration. Developed through a collaborative and consultative process with the local Aboriginal community, the design is inspired by the Five Islands Dreaming story. The facility will offer acute and outpatient services, expanded emergency, mental health, and rehabilitation services.  Connecting with its natural surroundings, the hospital design offers patients and visitors a tranquil environment with sweeping views of the Illawarra escarpment.    Read more: https://lnkd.in/gJFhqn46

With Queensland’s construction sector under immense pressure, modular construction might be the solution for Brisbane 2032’s Athletes Village—and beyond.    “Designing great places to live is at the heart of what we do, but we also need to deliver housing faster. The Olympic challenge has historically forced designers to innovate, and modular construction in housing is the logical next step,” says COX Director, Felipe Miranda.    The past three Olympics have embraced modular and prefabricated construction to varying degrees. But how can we take it further to truly harness the potential of modular construction?    Find out by reading the full article here: https://lnkd.in/geRwQ5rz

Genzo, described by Yellowtrace as one of Australia’s ‘crème de la crème’ hospitality venues and recently shortlisted in the 2024 Eat Drink Design Awards, is more than a place to dine. It’s a sensory journey, where the design invites as much indulgence as the menu itself, offering a feast for the eyes before the first bite.
