About us

Too many primary school children go hungry, directly affecting their ability to concentrate, engage and enjoy school. Even those who are not readily identified as “disadvantaged” can go hungry. Eat Up is an Australian not-for-profit that helps feed hungry kids. We partner with existing organisations to create a new service that provides healthy lunches for children at no cost. This simple but powerful project is helping to ensure some of the most vulnerable children in our community are having their basic nutritional needs met.

Unpacking school lunch in the UK 🇬🇧 School lunches, or school dinners as they are called in the UK, were first introduced in 1906 to undernourished children and funded by local council rates. In 1944, as Britain and the Allies gained ascendancy in WW2, school dinners were made compulsory for all. A major part of the war effort was to maintain morale, and that, like many things couldn’t be achieved on an empty stomach. “Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have.” Winston Churchill 🎩 However, the 1980s saw an increase in ‘fast-foods’ like chips, chicken nuggets and soft drinks being served. “In fact the 1980-2000 period is called the ‘no nutrition standards era’ for school meals.” Dr Lawrence Haddad In the 2000s, Jamie Oliver’s public and political advocacy for better school meals sparked a national conversation and ultimately a change of direction. The momentum of which continues today 🙌 “Kids are at school 190 days of the year. That’s a lot of meals and a big opportunity to have a positive impact. We can and we must do better. By looking after what our kids are eating at school, we’re giving them the best chance of thriving beyond.” Jamie Oliver 🥣 Since 2014, all UK children in the first three years of school are entitled to a free school lunch. Beyond this, families pay a subsidised fee, or the meals remain free for families below an earnings threshold. 🙌 In 2023 London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, extended the Free School Meals scheme for every primary school child in London for good. I was incredibly fortunate to meet and learn from the The Jamie Oliver Group, Stephanie Slater from School Food Matters, Sam Phillips and Sreshta Sridhar from Chefs in Schools, Pokesdown Community School and many more. This is my best shot at keeping this post “brief” 😅 🍎 School Food Matters educates children about food, runs excursions to farms, grows fruit and vegetables onsite at schools, teaches children how to cook, and captures the voices of children, parents and teachers to influence Government school food policy. 👨🍳 Chefs in Schools collaborates with passionate Principals and schools who want to level up their school lunch offering. They provide additional training to existing kitchen teams, help hire chefs to lead new programs, assist schools to identify what kitchen equipment they need and aspire to make colourful, flavourful, nutritious school food the norm. 🍽️ Pokesdown Community School in Bournemouth have transformed their school food offering in collaboration with Chefs In Schools. Chef Russ was hired after returning home to the UK after a decade working in a 5 star hotel in South Africa. The school’s broom cupboard was transformed into “Pokey Kitchen”. Russ and Sous Chef, Andrew prove you don’t need a massive kitchen to create massive positive impact - a major inspiration for our aspirations in Australia. 360+ meals are made from scratch daily (even the bread!) using fresh, seasonal and local ingredients.

I met Jamie Oliver! 🤯 What a phenomenal opportunity a Churchill Fellowship is. I can’t quite believe it! I am so grateful and fortunate to have this incredible learning experience ❤️ I’ve had to pinch myself again and again throughout this trip. I cannot thank the Winston Churchill Trust (Australia) enough. I’m so inspired by the amazing people and fantastic organisations that I’ve been able to meet and learn from - and there’s more to come! 🇯🇵🇮🇹🇬🇧🇺🇸 Thank you to The Jamie Oliver Group for being such generous hosts, and for connecting me to other wonderful school food initiatives in the UK. I’m excited to share more on this visit, others and school lunches in the UK soon. Yes, if you’re wondering, Jamie was every bit as positive, big thinking and high energy as he is on TV. Meet your heroes! 🙌 Thank you to Jo Murphy for your kindness and guidance. I appreciate it so much! It was fantastic to meet and learn from Rosanna Bluett and Alison Corfield on the day, as well as the incredible Stephanie Slater from School Food Matters 👏 Jonathan Pangu! Mate, this meeting would never have happened without you. I can’t thank you enough 🤩 As an added bonus, for the football fans out there - Jamie Oliver’s HQ is on the same road as Arsenal F.C’s Emirates Stadium. What a day! 🍽️🤝⚽️❤️

At CSL's Global HQ and Centre for R&D in Melbourne, we came together this week for DoGood Day - a time when we pause to focus on supporting those in need within our local communities. A team of 120 helping hands made over 3,000 sandwiches for school aged children who go without the food they need to thrive with thanks to Eat Up Australia; we supported our local Salvation Army centre with generous donations of warm clothing; and teams rallied together to donate much needed blood and plasma with Lifeblood. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed — you truly DidGood! https://bit.ly/3zteCCN #CSL #Australia #Melbourne

Unpacking school lunch in Italy 🇮🇹 So much of the passion, pride and persona of the Italian people is reflected in their food. This extends to their school lunches. Italians take enormous pleasure in not just eating great meals, but sharing great meals. Eating is a communal event - be it with family, in the piazzas or in the classroom. The Mediterranean diet is globally renowned and celebrated for being both delicious and highly nutritious. This power combination of taste and health sums up the guiding principles of school lunch in Italy. 🍅 In Rome, school lunch ingredients must be 70% organic. 🍇🥬 Over 90% of the fruit and vegetables used are sourced from local growers. This creates a shorter supply chain, more efficient processes and supports the community. 🔄 Each local region has a different weekly menu, in order to stagger the demand for the various food products on the market over time. 🚫 Fried foods are banned. 🍽️ Each lunch always includes two courses, a vegetable side dish and fresh fruit. 🤌 Each region takes pride in its unique specialties, with schools often incorporating local favourites like Parmigiano cheese. I also had the great privilege to volunteer at Chef Massimo Bottura and Lara Gilmore’s Refettorio in Modena. As well as visiting Refettorio Antoniano in Bologna. The word ‘Refettorio’ comes from the Latin ‘reficere’, meaning to ‘re-make’, but also to ‘re-store’. By leveraging community spaces, chefs, volunteers and donated food, incredible 3 course meals are prepared and served to disadvantaged individuals, vulnerable families and the homeless. Table service is provided in beautifully designed spaces with wonderful artwork, tables covers, plates, cutlery and flowers. All of the great elements of hospitality are used to create an elevated and special experience to those in difficult circumstances. Refettorios have now scaled globally by collaborating together with local organisations, including Refettorio OzHarvest in Sydney 💛 I will also be visiting Refettorios in London and Harlem (NYC). Without Government support, as overseas, for in-school lunches we have to get creative and explore how we can remove cost, without removing quality. The Refettorios provide an incredible example of providing restaurant quality nutritious meals by using surplus food, the leadership of chefs and generosity of volunteers. Thank you to Chef Matteo, Enrico and the wonderful team at Food for Soul for hosting me. 📍Next stop ⏭️ UK ✈️🇬🇧

Did you see Eat Up featured on SBS World News on the weekend? 📺 Reporter Allan Lee followed along as Lyndon and Nathan delivered sandwiches to our friends at Movelle Primary School 🥪 who have noticed an increase in the demand for sandwiches as the cost of living crisis continues. Also featured is the amazing Davina Onas, CEO of KCL Law and long-time supporter of Eat Up. Over the years, the KCL team has made many thousands of sandwiches for hungry kids during their workplace volunteering sessions! Big thanks to Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia for helping to raise awareness for what we do! 🙏🥪 https://lnkd.in/gYD5-frV
