Restoring Australia's unique landscapes and protecting biodiversity with science-led, on-ground solutions since 1982.

About us

We are the environmental not-for-profit that thinks bigger than the environment. We started conserving and restoring Australia’s landscapes in 1982 and we haven’t stopped since. At Greening Australia, we work on major programs that bring life to landscapes and restore balance to the natural environment in significant areas across Australia. Our hundreds of projects demonstrate conservation on a massive scale, covering millions of hectares of land and protecting thousands of native species. From the warm waters of the Great Barrier Reef to the cool island ark of Tasmania, we’re thinking big to tackle the challenges facing Australia’s unique and diverse landscapes in ways that work for communities, economies and nature.

  • Urban rivers are getting a makeover! From 2025, Greening Australia is working with local partners to restore vital urban waterways across the country. These projects are funded by the Australian Government - Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Here’s what’s in store: 🌊 Field River (SA) - A key project for Adelaide’s southern suburbs, Field River is a culturally significant waterway for the Kaurna People. We’ll be restoring 9 km of riparian habitat, focusing on native species like the Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo and protecting endangered Grey Box Grassy Woodlands. This project builds on years of community-driven efforts. 🌊 Wingecarribee River (NSW) - Flowing through the lands of the Gundungurra and Dharawal Peoples, this river links the coastal escarpment to the Blue Mountains. There has been decades of work by many dedicated people and organisations to restore parts of the Wingecarribee River. This new project will continue this work, restoring 16 km of riparian habitat, benefiting species like the Platypus, Koalas, and more. 🌊 Archerfield Wetlands (QLD) - In partnership with Brisbane Sustainability Agency, we’re transforming ponds at Archerfield Wetlands into a more natural system, and connecting them to the riparian corridor of Oxley Creek which will improve habitat and connectivity for threatened species. These projects are all about improving biodiversity, supporting local ecosystems, and enhancing community access to nature. Stay tuned for updates! #UrbanRiversandCatchmentsProgram, #NaturalHeritageTrust #biodiversity #SaveNativeSpecies

  • It's always great to see one of our restoration sites progressing so well! 🌱 Our team members Michael and Andrew recently visited Yaralla Estate in Sydney, where we’re working to restore the critically endangered Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest, bringing back biodiversity that was once widespread across the region. As Michael put it, 'I am genuinely beaming with pride about this project!' Keep an eye out for the full project video - coming soon! This work is part of our Rewilding Sydney program, with the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, which will see 170,000 trees planted across Greater Sydney by the end of 2025.

  • From riverbanks to the Reef, we're partnering with Traditional Owners, community volunteers, and local groups to restore landscapes and improve water quality in Far North Queensland, supported by the Natural Resources Recovery Program. Read more about the impact so far:

Greening Australia, alongside Traditional Owners, community volunteers, and local businesses - supported by our Natural Resources Recovery Program - are helping to restore eroding riverbanks, improving water quality, strengthening the landscape’s resilience and improving Reef health. Since the project started in June, it’s already making an impact by: 🌱 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 – Three sites are being rehabilitated so far, with two set for revegetation and one for bank stabilisation. 🐟 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐞𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 – With the catchment in the Wet Tropics region and close to the Great Barrier Reef, the project helps to improve reef health by reducing runoff that can carry fertilisers, pesticides, and sediments into the reef. Improving the quality of water flowing from the land is critical to easing pressure on the Reef, supporting its resilience and recovery. 🌱 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 – Mulgrave Landcare and Catchment Group nursery in Gordonvale, south of Cairns, has expanded to grow and supply trees for the project. 👥 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 – 22 community volunteer mornings and two tree planting events have been hosted already, connecting locals and creating a social hub for pensioners, carers, and volunteers in Gordonvale. 🌱 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐞𝐬 – This project is supporting several positions and creating supply chain opportunities for local businesses.  With regional funding driving real action on the ground, this work is helping to keep Queensland’s landscapes healthy and resilient for future generations. 📷 Representatives from Cairns River Improvement Trust and Greening Australia during a visit to inspect bank stabilisation works with the landholder.

  • What a fantastic opportunity to bring the Greening Australia Board, Thriving on Country Committee, and ops team together at our Caddigat Road site in the Snowy Monaro region of NSW. Thanks to Conscious Investment Management, we're restoring this landscape with biodiverse plantings across 435 hectares. Hear from our CEO, Heather Campbell, about the day's highlights:

Last week the Greening Australia Board and our Thriving on Country Committee spent a magical day with our amazing team out on our Caddigat Road site near Adaminaby in the Snowy Monaro area of NSW. This is a glorious property made possible by Conscious Investment Management who have partnered with us providing the funding for biodiverse plantings across 435ha of this 755ha property. By implementing a biodiverse carbon project this will reconnect the landscape across the rolling hills along the Murrumbidgee River and Caddigat Creek providing valuable habitat for our precious species. The day was packed with many important moments such as the Welcome to Country from the Traditional Owners, a visit to a cultural site on the property, an explanation of the project, and many conversations about the impact of our work 'Rebuilding Nature Together'. It was a day of listening, learning and being very grateful for our amazing staff and our very skilled advisory committee and Board Directors who are so generous with their time and support. The day before we had met with our volunteers at our Canberra nursery doing the work to grow the seedlings to plant at Caddigat. Through these days of conversations I was reminded just how important all of our volunteers and partners are. Thank you so much to everybody that makes it possible for us to deliver our 2030 strategy of 'Rebuilding Nature Together'.

  • Our friends from Macquarie University recently visited the Jarrega Seed Production Area (SPA) for their first round of plant collections as part of genetic research, supported by The Ian Potter Foundation. This important work will help us uncover answers to key questions like: 🟢 How much genetic diversity is in the SPA? 🟢 How genetically different are the provenances? 🟢 Are our seed sources inbred (hopefully not!)? 🟢 Can genetic diversity explain differences in survival and performance at the SPA? Stay tuned for updates as the research progresses!

  • Seeing Narelle and John’s property come to life with native plants and wildlife is what our work is all about. We're proud to be partnering with Officeworks to create amazing results like this 🌱

We recently checked in with landholders, Narelle Moody and John Boyd (pictured), whose beautiful 800-hectare property on the Monaro, NSW, has received 2000 plants over the last five years as part of our Restoring Australia initiative. Narelle purchased the original property ‘Crookshanks’ nearly three decades ago, knowing nothing of conservation or environmental matters, and used it to run riding horses, superfine sheep and angus cattle. Realising that the land was unsuitable for making money from grazing, Narelle and John have since been passionate about restoring it to its previous functional best - free from feral animals, rubbish dumping and the intrusion of weeds. Since the first planting session in 2019, the couple have noticed that the soil holds more water after every rain event, native grasses have started to renew themselves from old seed stock and there has been an increase in bird life as the trees grow. Narelle comments: “The density of the ground cover is providing much more seed for the seed eaters, and insects on the eucalypts are attracting insect-eating birds. Since planting, we have spotted more wildlife around the property, including goannas and smaller lizards among the rocks, as well as kangaroos, wallaroos, wallabies and echidnas. “Many landholders are interested in restoring habitat on their properties but lack the capacity and knowledge or confidence to undertake it. Being able to partner with Greening Australia for the Restoring Australia program with Officeworks gives us the confidence that the job will be done well. There is great pleasure in being the instigators of such a marvelous process. The peace found walking in amongst trees you have grown yourselves is beyond words.” #Officeworks #PeoplePlanetPositive 💚🌲🍃

  • 40 years ago, restoration was all about hope and hard work: communities and volunteers grabbing shovels, digging holes by hand, and planting seeds from local bushland. Since the early days we’ve grown literally and figuratively, from direct-seeding to pioneering innovative nature-based solutions right here in Australia. Last year we sat down with some of our longest-serving team members to hear their stories, from the early days to now. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4gLnt3b
