Celebrating its 100-year anniversary, not-for-profit network Cohen Connect advocates for good design and the power of collective action to support transformative ideas. This culminated in this year’s eagerly anticipated EG Cohen Medal announcement and panel event in Perth. The presentation celebrated the values of dedication, empathy and resilience, and was followed by a panel discussion on promoting design and planning literacy in WA schools. Our own Nicholas Temov joined colleagues Emma Williamson, Jennie Officer, Richard Hassell and Andrew Lilleyman on the panel of experts, moderated by Cohen Connect chair Philip Gresley, to discuss the theme ‘Designing Hope’ addressing today’s unprecedented changes in the built environment. Nic shared his personal insights on working with Cohen Connect to build one of its initiatives, the Seeds programme. So far, the volunteer initiative has helped 820 high school students learn more about city design through interactive walking tours, presentations and in-class sessions. Thank you Cohen Connect for hosting another fantastic event, and for the design and planning community supporting their work. #architecture #design #planning #futurethinking #enablingcommunitiestoflourish

With around 18% of the population affected by neurodiversity, understanding how individuals react to environmental stimuli in the workplace is crucial to creating spaces that are safe and equitable. Our Head of Research & Development Emil Jonescu, PhD recently led a study with co-contributors Oluwole [Alfred] Olatunji, Talia Uylaki, Sonja Duric, Edith Cowan University and University of Southern Queensland that explores how we can design workplaces in the construction industry that accommodate diverse sensory needs. The recently published chapter highlights how championing diverse perspectives can realign expectations and promote more inclusive design outcomes. On Saturday our Adelaide Studio welcomed a curious group of architects and designers for Adelaide’s first Adaptive Reuse Design Sprint 🏃➡️🌿 Developed by Hames Sharley, Arup, TF Certifiers + Consultants and Australian Institute of Architects, the event challenged attendees to reimagine how vacant CBD buildings can be transformed to meet evolving housing and community needs. Teams were presented with a selected site in the CBD, and after a preliminary high-level analysis from Arup on engineering, TF Certifiers + Consultants on compliance and Future Urban on planning, they began working together to rapidly explore design solutions to unlock new possibilities. In two hours our four teams came up with very distinct designs, each with a unique strength: 🏢 One team focused on building envelope and maximising yield through building performance ☀️ Another team introduced a void along the façade to improve daylight access with minimal impact on structure and yield 🪴 Another team explored a central void, increasing biodiversity on site while providing an internal garden 🏗️ One team identified that the building owner also owns the adjacent building, and leveraged that to create a mini-precinct and build up height over the existing site It was wonderful to see the studio abuzz with architects and designers in their element, quickly generating creative ways to solve the problems of these vacant sites and unlock their hidden potential, while aiming to enhance community wellbeing, preserve cultural heritage and promote environmental stewardship. #adaptivereuse #sustainabledesign #adelaide #futurethinking #enablingcommunitiestoflourish

It was wonderful to share our Perth Studio event space with the ‘Flexible Work For Leaders’ event last week, hosted in partnership with NAWIC WA and Australian Institute of Architects. Author of ‘Flexperts’ Gillian Brookes shared intriguing insights from her research and experience helping teams embrace flexible work to unlock business advantages and wellbeing benefits. Through the interactive Q&A, Gillian, Kym Muir and Rebecca Spencer led an insightful discussion about successful strategies for achieving flexibility, for both on-site and off-site construction teams and consultants, without impacting on productivity and project delivery. The importance of wellbeing and people’s choice to participate in community and family life alongside career commitments was an important element in the discussions. It was a great evening that fostered a lot of thoughtful discussions with women in leadership within the construction and design industry. Thank you to those who joined us and to those who helped make the evening a success! #womeninconstruction #flexibleworking #enablingcommunitiestoflourish
