Our gem of an Operations Assistant, Yoshi, just marked his second workaversary at Reground! ✨ As part of our collections team, Yoshi has been loving the hands-on and social elements to his role. We asked Yoshi some questions to reflect on his time at Reground: 💡 How would you describe your year at Reground in 3 words? Share, explore, discover. 💡 What is the biggest thing you've learned in your two years? Getting to learn more about the Circular Economy. 💡 What's been your favourite moment in your two years? Chatting to our community of end-users. 💡 What are you most looking forward to in your next year at Reground? Expanding my knowledge. Thank you for all that you do, Yoshi! 🙌 #WorkAnniversary

It’s a great honor to receive the Trailblazer 2024 Sustainability Champion award from Melbourne Food & Wine 🥂 When Reground started in 2014, a handful of specialty coffee roasters and cafes in Melbourne decided that environmental protection was a priority for them. They helped build this social enterprise, close the loop, and set a new standard for sustainability in coffee. Special thanks to James Kilby, team Seven Seeds Coffee Roasters and Loafer Bread who believed in this from day one. Being recognised is an honor because we still haven’t achieved what we set out to do—ensuring that where there is a coffee machine, there is a Reground bin. Last night, the Melbourne hospitality industry told us that sustainability and this solution is still very much a priority. This is excellent feedback and reason to keep going. The hospitality sector is a community I am proud to have come from, so many thanks to MFWF for this recognition. This is just the start 🚀

A massive thank you to Melbourne Food & Wine ✨ We are honored to announce that Ninna Katrine Larsen has been awarded the Trailblazer Award in Sustainability by MF&W! For over 30 years - the MF&W Legends Hall of Fame has paid tribute to the leaders, groundbreakers, and visionaries of Victoria’s food, drink, and hospitality industry. System change is never easy. Reground has been working for over 10 years to engage and assist businesses in stepping into the local circular economy - our work is still just beginning! Although Ninna Katrine Larsen couldn't be here to accept the award in person, Annaliese Lawry graciously accepted on Ninna's behalf. We are so grateful to Melbourne Food & Wine for celebrating local leaders in sustainability and recognising our work! Here's to many more years of system change still to come! 💐

Before I left for Europe, I was invited to join a panel for the Open House event at Architectus. Reground has been working with communities living in apartment buildings for many years. We have studied the buildings and connected with the people and the system to understand how to achieve best-practice outcomes for waste management, circularity, and behavior once the building is operational. It is not simple. Social housing communities hold a special place in my heart, as, unfortunately, the system is significantly skewed against their best interests. Long term poor outcomes often result from poor design solutions. This must change. I am excited that new Homes Victoria projects are embedding social enterprises and evidence-based, people-focused pratices—like Reground and Cultivating Community Melbourne—into the very DNA of the buildings. From Regrounds perspective, we have finally reached the source. Meaningful collaboration is brewing, and while we all have to learn to work together, I am starting to see signs of a system that is evolving. My goal is that all people, regardless of socio-economic status, will live in buildings that respect and elevate them and their communities

Melbourne’s population is projected to reach 8 million by 2050; we urgently need inclusive housing strategies.  As part of Open House Melbourne, we recently hosted a sold-out panel session with industry experts to discuss how the built environment can foster connected communities and support social enterprises. Moderated by Alexandra Lawlor, our own Elizabeth Seuseu was joined by fellow project collaborators: Sophie Buchanan, Rob Rees MBE DL and Ninna Katrine Larsen. The topic of affordable housing dominates many of our newsfeeds, and our audience came prepared. We talked long into the night about tried and tested strategies to facilitate a safe community. We were amazed to realise one of our audience members is a resident of our recently completed Markham Avenue estate – one of Victoria’s first social housing projects delivered under the Homes Victoria Big Build Program. He asked some really meaningful questions and gifted us with firsthand feedback on his positive lived experience.  Having worked on Markham since its initial phases, Liz reflects, ‘Its great to know that all the hard work we put into community engagement and design has paid off. In our design process engaging with communities and neighbourhoods is not a tick box exercise. It was important to have a diversity of voices on our panel and the audience brought lived experience of living - and thriving - in social housing.” Thanks to our team of organisers and collaborators who joined us for the event, with special thank you to Yanie Poon who was key to getting us the opportunity to host. Learn more about our approach to building communities here: https://lnkd.in/gx_GcjBb #affordablehousing #socialhousing #housingsupply #sustainablecommunities #melbournehousing #socialenterprise Cultivating Community Melbourne, RPS, Reground

As you can see, we had a lot of fun with Griet Thijs from City of Stonnington and Annaliese from Reground sharing about Sustainability Victoria's Circular Economy Councils Fund project focusing on Best Practice Waste Management in Multi-Unit Dwellings. The Education team from the Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia had some great questions and learnings to share. Thanks Gayle Sloan for inviting us along! The best practice guides for recycling and waste management in multi-unit dwellings were developed by Reground in partnership with ten Victorian councils in 2023, funded by SV and are available here: https://lnkd.in/gXv5jE2q

Josh Munari and Andrew Scott had a blast delivering a fantastic composting workshop at West Space! 🌱 Funded by Yarra City Council, West Space organised a day filled with speeches and workshops led by local leaders for the community. Collingwood Yards Precinct faced a challenge: they introduced on-site composting facilities but needed more engagement from vendors and community members. Reground’s workshop brought our expertise to the forefront, engaging and exciting individuals about recycling! Our hands-on, informative composting workshop aimed to boost the utilisation of the on-site composting facilities. We received incredible feedback from the day and love doing this on the ground work in our communities! 🙌 #Composting #Sustainability

Reground is a successful funding recipient through the Victorian Government’s Circular Economy Business Innovation Centre, delivered by Sustainability Victoria! ✨ With this funding, Reground will embark on a transformative project to deliver skills development training for shopping centre management. Our goal is to enhance awareness and understanding of circular economy principles and actions. Currently, many shopping centres operate with basic one or two-stream waste systems, leading to significant resource loss to landfill and higher costs for management and businesses. By increasing awareness and capacity for sustainability, we aim to empower businesses within shopping centres to step into the circular economy. Thank you again to Sustainability Victoria and Matt Genever for supporting this initiative! #VicGoesCircular
