Delivering the finest healthcare to rural and remote Australia

About us

The RFDS is a national, charitable, health organisation delivering primary healthcare and 24-hour emergency services for those that live in rural and remote Australia. Long known as one of the largest aeromedical organisations in the world, the RFDS delivers health care where mainstream health services are not available, using the latest in aviation, medical and communications technology and a broad-reaching ground-service fleet. Supported by a vast number of volunteers and supporters, the RFDS provides a lifeline for those that live, work and travel in rural and remote Australia, and has been doing so for over nine decades.

  • Congratulations to our own Brannan Clarke, who has successfully completed his aircraft engineering apprenticeship! 🔧 Brannan Clarke started at the RFDS Adelaide Base in January 2020 and late last year completed his Diploma in Aeroskills (Mechanical) including all the theoretical and practical training. To support his transition from apprentice to licensed aircraft engineer, Brannan is off to our Alice Springs Base to begin a six-month secondment. After four years of hard work and dedication, we look forward to having Brannan as part of the Flying Doctor Team for many years to come. ✈️ 📲 Current RFDS career opportunities: https://lnkd.in/gRC_H5i

  • Meet Sophie and Tim - our two new engineering apprentices in WA👋 Sophie has a longstanding interest in mechanics and engineering, and came across aircraft engineering through skydiving. She chose to apply for an apprenticeship with us because she understands how vital the RFDS is for the Western Australian community. Tim has been working in our RFDS WA Stores team and knows the ins and outs of the service. We are so excited to see him develop throughout the apprenticeship. We are thrilled to have them join the engineering team! ❤️💙

  • The ultimate flying intensive care unit. 🛩️ How our Pilatus PC–24 is set up? Our new Pilatus PC-24 aero medical aircraft are the first of their kind in Australia and around the world. These ‘emergency wards’ in our skies have the capacity for three stretchered patients and two medical teams consisting of four doctors and nurses. These jets have the capability of landing and taking off on unsealed runways as short as 800m and can halve existing flight times and travel longer distances. Based in Jandakot and Broome in WA, and Adelaide in SA, the addition of these new jets will boost the overall fleet capacity for response times within all regions. ✈️Number in RFDS Fleet: 5 ✈️Maximum altitude: 45,000 feet ✈️Maximum speed: 787 km per hour ✈️Range: 3,610 km ✈️Cabin dimensions: Width: 1.69m, Length: 7m, Height of 1.55m Read more about our fleet: https://lnkd.in/gAC36k7g

  • 🗣️ “If you can retrieve in the Northern Territory, particularly in the Top End of Australia, you can retrieve anywhere in the world.” These are the words of Professor Dianne Stephens OAM, whose accomplished career as an intensive care doctor has included leading the ICU response for the 2002 Bali Bombings, serving for the RAAF in Iraq and working through the 2016 Cyclone Winston in Fiji. These days, Professor Stephens leads the School of Medicine at Charles Darwin University, which last year celebrated the inaugural graduates of Australia’s first Master of Aeromedical Retrieval qualification – a program developed alongside the RFDS.
