As part of Uber's global Driving Change initiative, a $10 million commitment over five years will fund organisations dedicated to preventing, addressing, and responding to gender-based violence. Over the summer, Uber has supported the Australian data-tech social enterprise, She’s A Crowd, to launch Safer Spaces - a nationwide behaviour change and awareness initiative focused on preventing and responding to occurrences of gender-based violence in nightlife spaces. 🌃 By collaborating with nighttime economy leaders and providing them with actionable recommendations for fostering safer experiences, the project aims to promote gendered safety across Australia’s nightlife industries - including rideshare services. During the bustling summer and festive season, more people are going to rely on Uber to get from A to B. With a surge in activity, we've partnered with Uber Australia to remind drivers and riders how to stay safe. For riders, make sure you check the information provided by Uber before you get into your Uber. This includes the vehicle make, driver's name, license plate etc. All trips are GPS-tracked on Uber, so you can also share your live location with your friends and family on the go. Alongside the Safer Spaces campaign and nightlife safety report, Uber Australia and She's A Crowd have compiled crucial information to assist drivers in navigating the busy and festive season and ensure everyone’s safety. These silly season safety tips for Uber drivers, supported by stories shared by victim-survivors, will be integrated into the driver app as mandatory reading material. Today, I find myself reflecting on a diary entry I wrote at the tender age of 14, echoing the harrowing reality of sexual assault that, even after two decades, remains at the forefront of our collective mission: “I went to Rob’s BBQ today as well. Andrew’s going-away party. Him and Ariel are going out and he…got in her pants even though she said no. No, no, no. Fine, then. It’s just not fair.” These words, etched into my diary by a 14-year-old grappling with the injustice of sexual assault, are a stark reminder of why we do the work we continue to do at She’s A Crowd. Over the summer, She’s A Crowd has brought our focus to experiences of gender-based violence in the night-time economy, including venues, festivals, rideshare and hospitality workplaces. Much like how our Safer Spaces project aims to take collective action and provide survivor-informed recommendations to industry leaders, this article emphasises the importance of taking “a community-led approach,” merging “expertise and data with lived experience” to create a thriving (and safe) night-time economy.
