As a dynamic energy company, our growing portfolio is underpinning Australia’s transition to renewable energy future.
About us
Snowy Hydro is a dynamic and growing integrated energy business that supplies electricity to more than one million homes and businesses. The Snowy Hydro Group includes our generation business and three retail companies: Red Energy, Lumo Energy and Direct Connect. Our role is to provide national energy security, help with the transition to a new era of renewables, and maintain healthy competition in the retail energy markets. Our retail companies put customers first and continue to be recognised as leaders in customer service and support. Our story began in 1949 with the construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which included nine power stations, 16 major dams, 80 kilometres of aqueducts and 145 kilometres of interconnected tunnels. Today we have a generation capacity of 5,500MW, including our gas-fired and diesel-fired assets, and are the fourth-largest retailer in the energy market. Snowy Hydro is well underway with the construction of the Snowy 2.0 pumped-hydro project, which will add 2,000MW of generation and 175 hours of storage to the energy market. As leaders in renewable energy we have also signed contracts for more than 1,000MW of renewable generation from 10 wind and solar projects. These are exciting additions to our energy portfolio that will help underpin energy security and Australia’s renewable energy future. Snowy Hydro has been incorporated under the Corporations Act (Cth) 2001 since 2002, and is governed by an independent Board of Directors. For more than 70 years, Snowy has been a proud member and supporter of the communities in which we live and work. We make a significant contribution to the local economy through jobs, investment and business opportunities.

We’re excited to announce key updates to our parental leave policies, designed to support our employees during one of life’s most important transitions. Parental Leave: 30 weeks of paid leave for primary carers and 10 weeks for non-primary carers, including for adoption. Reproductive Leave: Up to 10 days of paid leave per year for scheduled fertility treatments. By increasing entitlements to paid parental leave for both primary and non-primary carers, as well as providing for adoption and reproductive health, we are supporting employees during these significant life milestones. Welcoming autumn at Khancoban Pondage! 🍂 Khancoban Pondage is stunning all year round, but there's something extra special about it as the seasons change. Khancoban Pondage is important for the Snowy Scheme operations. Water is stored here for irrigation and environmental releases after hydropower is generated at both Murray 1 and Murray 2 power stations. #SnowyScheme #KhancobanPondage #hydropower #watermanagement

Tunnelling Tuesday 🚇 Deep in the heart of Kosciuszko National Park, the Lady Northcott Tunnel plays an important role in the Snowy Scheme, a complex and interconnected hydroelectric network. This 2.4km tunnel features concrete linings at both ends, but most of the tunnel remains bare rock! It collects and channels water from a network of aqueducts, guiding it through the mountain into the Siren Song aqueduct and eventually reaching Geehi Dam. #TunnellingTuesday #SnowyScheme #engineering #aqueducts

The perfect couple: hydro & gravity 💙 Some love stories, like that of hydro and gravity, are built to last... At Snowy Hydro’s Tumut 3 Power Station, this powerful duo works in harmony to generate clean, renewable energy for the National Electricity Market. Tumut 3 isn’t just any power station; it’s the largest of the Snowy Scheme’s hydropower stations, using gravity to send water rushing through turbines, producing electricity when it’s needed most. And with its pumped hydro capabilities, we can reverse the flow, storing energy for the future. It's a perfect partnership...reliable, sustainable, and built to stand the test of time. #hydropower #renewableenergy #snowyscheme #pumpedhydro

Celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 💡 Today, we’re shining a spotlight on five of our incredible women in STEM who are driving innovation and shaping Australia's energy future. At Snowy Hydro, we recognise that gender equality in STEM is crucial for building a better future. Yet, women and girls continue to face barriers and biases in pursuing STEM careers. That’s why we’re committed to inspiring the next generation through initiatives like the Snowy Hydro STEM Academy, helping young minds explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and maths. Join science communicator, astrophysicist and Snowy tunnel boring machine namesake, Dr Kirsten Banks as she chats with five inspiring Snowy women in STEM about their careers and what drives them. #womeninSTEM #SnowySTEMAcademy #breakingbarriers

Powering up the week with Talbingo Dam! ⚡💦 🏗️ Standing tall at 161.5m, Talbingo Dam boasts the highest dam wall in the Snowy Scheme...that's more than two times taller than the Sydney Opera House! 🏊♂️ With a capacity of 921 gigalitres, it holds enough water to fill over 368,000 Olympic swimming pools 🧩 Completed in 1970, this rockfill dam is like a giant jigsaw puzzle with strong rock on the outside, and a watertight core ensuring resilience and reliability. ⚡ Talbingo Reservoir powers Tumut 3, the largest station in the Snowy Scheme. It stores energy and generates electricity right when it’s needed most. #SnowyScheme #hydropower #engineering #renewableenergy
