The Stralis Aircraft team and our consortia partners Skytrans Airlines and Aviation Australia are thrilled to receive a grant via the Emerging Aviation Technology Partnerships (EATP) Program – an Australian Government initiative. Announced today, this outcome bolsters the belief in decarbonised flight and hydrogen-electric aircraft manufacturing in Queensland. Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts THANK YOU for this brilliant news! “We are proud to contribute to aviation innovation in Australia from our base at Brisbane Airport. This support indicates the Australian Federal Government's belief in a #FutureMadeInAustralia across #aerospace #cleantech, #cleanenergy and #aircraft #manufacturing”, said our co-founder and CEO Bob Criner. The funding will support our conversion of a Beechcraft A36 Bonanza, known as “Bonnie,” into a 200kW Hydrogen-Electric (H-E) aircraft to demonstrate the benefits and capabilities of this zero-carbon emissions propulsion technology. We will fly Bonnie in 2025, the first piloted H-E flight in the Southern Hemisphere. “Skytrans is thrilled at the announcement of Federal Government support for Stralis Aircraft in their quest to develop Hydrogen Electric propulsion technology for aviation. Skytrans looks forward to partnering with Stralis to deliver the first emission-free commercial flight in Australia,” said Alan Milne, Skytrans Group CEO. Raechel Paris, Executive GM of Governance and Sustainability at Brisbane Airport Corporation, welcomed today’s news: “We congratulate the Australian Government on supporting this exciting company based here at Brisbane Airport. Stralis aims to deliver cleaner, cheaper, quieter aircraft, helping decarbonise aviation. Brisbane Airport is proud to support Stralis as a founding member of the Hydrogen Flight Alliance, a Queensland team working to see commercialised hydrogen-electric flight between BNE and Gladstone take off this decade.” Stralis is designing and building 15 and 50-seat hydrogen-electric aircraft that will achieve 50% lower operating costs due to maintenance and fuel savings and will service commercial routes up to a 3000km range. The demand for profitable decarbonised travel and world-class passenger experiences is evidenced by our flight partner commitments from 10 airlines across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, the USA, and Europe. “These latest projects will explore how emerging aviation can ... unlock manufacturing opportunities in Australia, as well as how we can make this technology lower cost and more sustainable..." said Assistant Minister for Regional Development & Education, Senator Anthony Chisolm. We’ve had some exciting wins recently: an agreement on our first SA-1 LOI from a new customer, filing our first provisional patent, starting work with an exciting new partner on our cooling system design, upgrading Clyde, our Bonanza technology demonstrator and taking him on the road to the Regional Aviation Association of Australia (RAAA) event to showcase him to our customers, and unlocking initial liquid hydrogen supply in Australia through our Hydrogen Flight Alliance (HFA). The team completed a Bonanza propulsion system design sprint, where we made rapid progress on our system architecture and requirements definition. We are pushing hard to complete the preliminary design for the Bonanza program in July. Stralis Aircraft (YC W23) had an exciting visit to Tokyo, Japan last week, attending SusHi Tech Tokyo 2024 Global Startup Program Official Account where we met with startup founders and investors from Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Singapore. Huge thank you to the Trade and Investment Queensland team (Tak Adachi, Kathleen Y., Keiko Yanai, Manatsu Ishida) for inviting us, allowing us to exhibit at their booth and the support while on the ground. We also met with Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB), Japan Transport and Tourism Research Institute (JTRRI), Honda, Sojitz Corporation and Scrum Ventures about partnerships and investment. Japan is investing $33B in a next-gen hydrogen aircraft program (see link below) and there is a strong Australia-Japan relationship in the hydrogen industry. Our CEO Bob Criner presented at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), ACI World - Airports Council International and Airbus IIWG Airport Compatibility of Alternative Aviation Fuels Task Force at Changi Airport Group in Singapore this week. The group is working to further develop a Concept of Operations covering aircraft handling, refuelling/recharging, emergency procedures and the International Civil Aviation Organization regulatory changes required to prepare airports for entry into service of hydrogen and battery-electric powered aircraft later this decade. The day included site tours of Gladstone Airport corporation, CQUniversity hydrogen training facilities, and the new Fortescue PEM50 electrolyser facility.
