Torrens to Darlington Project
Government Administration
The 10.5km Torrens to Darlington Project is the final piece of South Australia's North-South Corridor.
About us
The Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project is the final 10.5km section of South Australia’s North-South Corridor, and is the most significant infrastructure road project ever undertaken in South Australia. The upgrade will reduce travel time by up to 20 minutes and allow motorists to bypass 21 sets of traffic lights between the River Torrens and Darlington. The new T2D motorway will unlock 78km of non-stop traffic-light-free travel between Gawler and Old Noarlunga, with links to the port and airport precinct. The T2D Project will stimulate economic activity, supporting up to 4,900 new jobs and help ensure people, produce and products arrive where they need to be safer and sooner. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are very large and complex pieces of machinery that excavate tunnels and can bore through a variety of ground conditions. The TBMs we will use to construct the T2D Tunnels have been purchased from world-leading manufacturer Herrenknecht AG. These TBMs: 🦺 are around 100m long with a diameter of around 15m – roughly the height of Thebarton Theatre or Edwardstown Bunnings 🦺 will operate continuously and progress about 8 - 10m per day. (The image pictured below is a TBM at Herrenknecht’s Schwanau, Germany headquarters.) #TunnelBoringMachines #TBMs #Infrastructure #T2DProject

The TBM components are being made in Germany and China. They will be fully assembled and tested in China before being disassembled and shipped to Adelaide by sea. The first components are expected to arrive in late 2025. Once in Adelaide, they will be assembled and commissioned before tunnelling begins. Main construction will start this year, with tunnel boring machine works for the Southern Tunnels planned to begin in the third quarter of 2026. #TunnelBoringMachines #TBM #Infrastructure #T2DProject

Another huge month for the T2D Project 🚀 In February 2025, the team focused on key broader network upgrade projects being implemented to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow along South Road, both during construction and after the T2D Project’s completion. Here are some key highlights: 🚗 Release of a new concept design for the James Congdon and Sir Donald Bradman Drive intersection upgrade 🚦 Commencement of works to remove the frustrating ‘dogleg’ intersection at Grange Road, Holbrooks Road, and East Avenue 📍 Two Community Drop-In sessions along the project alignment 📺 Featured in Building Ideas on Channel 9 🚦 Ongoing early works in the Southern Precinct. #T2DProject #FebruaryUpdate #Infrastructure #SouthRoad #Adelaide

Throwback to when the Thebarton Centenary Community Bus used to run through Thebarton and West Torrens. Starting in 1983, this volunteer-run service was made possible thanks to generous donations from local service groups. It ran until 1997 when the two councils merged, and the service was phased out. While safety requirements have come a long way since the photo was taken in 1989, we couldn’t help but wonder at how the neighbourhood has evolved over the last few years. Looking ahead, the T2D Project is set to improve the North-South Corridor, boosting its capacity and connecting it better with the surrounding transport network. This will help meet community needs and make public transport more efficient for everyone. #ConnectedCommunities #T2DProject

The T2D Project is the final 10.5km section of the North-South Corridor, and will complete 78km of non-stop, traffic light-free motorway between Gawler and Old Noarlunga. Drivers will be able to bypass 21 sets of traffic lights between the River Torrens and Darlington as they travel through two separate tunnels, connected by an open motorway. #T2DProject #Infrastructure #Adelaide #SouthAustralia
