  • 🕛 At the stroke of midnight on Sunday 25 August 2024 we will say farewell to The Treasury Brisbane after 29 years as caretaker of this magnificent building. It is an important symbol of the development and progress of Queensland 's history. The Queensland Government Cabinet met in the building until 1905, when the Premier's Department moved into the Executive Building (subsequently known as the Lands Administration Building) in George Street. Government offices continued to occupy the building in one shape or form until the late 1990s when it was sold and converted into what is now known as Treasury Brisbane's casino, after the Registrar-General moved out. A new owner will soon be announced as we look ahead to the highly anticipated first phase of opening of #TheStarBrisbane on Thursday 29 August. Gaming operations will cease at 11.00pm and the property will close totally an hour later at midnight. Treasury Hotel will remain open after this date with both part of the nine heritage buildings that make up the #QueensWharfBrisbane precinct. #queenslandhistory

A glittering unveiling overnight of home-grown, internationally revered artist Lindy Lee AO Lee’s masterpiece, ‘Being Swallowed by the Milky Way’, ahead of the first phase of #TheStarBrisbane staged opening from August 29, 2024. The stunning 8-metre, 8,000-kilogram oblong sculpture features 25 thousand tiny holes puncturing the bronze surface to appear as a shimmering, light-filled galaxy of silver and gold stars. It is located at the George Street entrance to The Star Brisbane, as part of the transformational $3.6b+ #QueensWharfBrisbane precinct. The Australian painter and sculptor of Chinese heritage, Lindy Lee AO, was on hand to light up her sculpture for the first time and said it was a joy to create a legacy for her birthplace as part of such a game changing development for the city. “It’s so fitting that Being Swallowed by the Milky Way is being installed in my birth city; emotionally and spiritually that is very important to me. “I feel extremely proud to be part of Brisbane’s growth as a city." Highly regarded art figure Philip Bacon AO led the specialist Artistic Advisory panel which curated the standout collection of artworks by local, First Nations and International artists, that will feature across the 7.5 hectares of public space within the Queen’s Wharf precinct, including waterfront areas by the Brisbane River. “Lindy Lee is arguably Australia’s greatest sculptor and her work is known and sought after, both nationally and internationally. “To have such a major and exquisite sculpture in a prominent place, viewable day and night by the public is a coup for any city." Daniel Finch, Chief Executive Officer of The Star Brisbane said the sculpture will help elevate the city’s standing as a cultural city. “All of the artworks will be showcased to millions of people, who will visit us for years to come, including for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.” “It will complement the South Bank Corporation precinct a short walk across the Neville Bonner Bridge helping further position Brisbane, not just as an Olympic city, but as a vibrant cultural playground.” Far East Consortium Australia Destination Brisbane Consortium Chow Tai Fook Enterprises (CTFE)

  • With just two weeks until the first phase of the highly anticipated opening of #TheStarBrisbane at the $3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf Brisbane precinct, already some of the stunning artworks from local creatives have settled in at their new home. Titled ‘Lungfish Dreamz’, a supersized wall mural by talented Brisbane based artist Samuel Tupou, depicts Australian lungfish swimming into a vibrant sunrise comprised of pixilated squares of blue, violet, orange and yellow mosaic glass tiles. It can be seen adjacent to the bicentennial bike path between Queen’s Wharf Road and the Brisbane River. Samuel said he wanted to connect with the area and of course the river but was fascinated by what’s beneath its surface. “I discovered that the lungfish dates back millions of years and is found in the upper reaches of the Brisbane River and other South East Queensland waterways. Not far away the giant goddess-like 'Sheila' by Justene Williams stands prominently riverside of the existing Commissariat Store, a giant monument to the female form. She also features a stainless-steel halo that is open to interpretation and self-reflection. Justene is hoping to spark discussion. “The name Sheila riffs on the term used for an Aussie woman but it is also the female character carved in stone mainly in Europe from the 11th century, which has interpretations of protector, fertility and empathy and I wanted to immortalise those qualities. Some people may giggle at the busty representation but I’m hoping everyone will stop and look.” Destination Brisbane Consortium Perides Art #publicart
