A powerful investigation by BBC News has revealed that millions of waste tyres exported from the UK are ending up in illegal pyrolysis plants in India (as pictured), causing significant health and environmental harm. It’s a reminder of the risks in global tyre disposal chains when proper oversight is missing. In speaking to the BBC, TSA CEO Lina Goodman shared how Australia has been leading the way to ensure end-of-life tyres are managed responsibly through regulatory reform and greater transparency. Since 2021, Australia has banned the export of whole and baled tyres, and introduced safeguards to prevent harm to people and the planet. At Tyre Stewardship Australia, our Foreign End Market Verification (FEMV) program provides the oversight needed to reduce the risk of improper handling and dumping in overseas markets. Through on-the-ground audits and independent assurance, FEMV aims to support a circular economy for tyres we can trust. Paving the Way (Rubber) - the results are in! The Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) Inc. in collaboration with Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) and Australian Flexible Pavement Association (AfPA) is pleased to invite you to Recycled Rubber Use in Roads: Demonstration Project Outcomes webinar, our second in the series. We will hear from experts about the outcomes of the 12 demonstration sites, the long-term sustainability benefits of rubber-modified asphalt and the cost benefits compared to standard asphalt. The life cycle assessment (LCA) and monitoring results are essential in developing the technical mix specifications to assist local government engineers to apply in their business-as-usual road pavement option. 🚨 NSW Leads on Product Stewardship – but Where’s the Federal Action? TSA welcomes the NSW Government’s Product Lifecycle Responsibility Bill 2025 – a major step towards stronger product stewardship in Australia. While NSW is taking action, the Federal Government continues to delay. State-by-state approaches create inefficiencies and inconsistencies. Australia needs national regulation to achieve real impact. The time for voluntary schemes has long passed – decisive federal action is needed now. Read the full statement on the TSA website: https://lnkd.in/eF6SBrW4

Another great reminder of the impact circular solutions can have on our roads 🚧 Boral’s innovative use of OTR tyres in asphalt continues to demonstrate strong results, reinforcing the value of resource recovery in road construction. This project, delivered in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council and supported by TSA and Australian Flexible Pavement Association (AfPA), highlights how industry collaboration is driving long-term change. Read more below. #ResourceRecovery #CircularEconomy #Asphalt #OTRTyres
We're using old tyres to pave new roads! Boral has launched an Australian-first proprietary crumbed rubber asphalt bitumen that replaces common crumbed rubber with that from Off the Road (OTR) tyres – those used for heavy-duty industrial vehicles. The alternative asphalt mix has a higher cracking resistance and extends the life of pavements by up to two times that of conventional road treatment. Our high-binder crumbed rubber asphalt surfacing uses end-of-life OTR tyres sourced from front-end loaders and quarry haul dump truck vehicles from Boral sites. We partnered with Sunshine Coast Council to conduct a road demonstration across three sites to measure against different traffic conditions. By the numbers, these tests included: ➡️ 7,000 sqm of local roads ➡️ 10,000 kilograms of OTR-derived crumbed rubber from our West Burleigh Quarry ➡️ equivalent to 25 large earthmover tyres This road demonstration marked the first-known use in Australia of OTR tyres in asphalt mix. “We are pleased to be leaders in construction material innovation and bring to market our high-binder crumb rubber asphalt surfacing derived from Off the Road tyres," said Richard Pearson, Executive General Manager of Asphalt at Boral. "Our successful engagement with Sunshine Coast Council, Australian Flexible Pavement Association (AfPA) and Tyre Stewardship Australia led to the creation of this new product that will provide increased circularity benefits to the community – diverting tyres away from landfill and into new recycled products." Viva Energy Australia’s commitment to establishing a tyre recycling facility at its Geelong refinery marks a significant step towards industry innovation and investment in regional Victoria. It’s encouraging to see businesses driving change and ensuring that Australians remain custodians of our own waste. We look forward to seeing this project progress and its impact on the circular economy. #ResourceRecovery #CircularEconomy #WasteInnovation #TyreRecycling #AustralianIndustry
We've taken the first step in developing a tyre recycling facility in Melbourne that would have the ability to process up to 80,000 tonnes of used tyres per year, diverting them from landfill and contributing to the manufacture of lower-carbon fuels. Viva Energy Australia has signed a memorandum of understanding with Canadian resource recovery and advanced recycling business, Klean Industries Inc, to collaborate on a pre-feasibility study for the establishment of a tyre recycling facility to recover sustainable resources. The tyre-recycling facility will extract three key products from tyres: - Recovered carbon black (rCB), used in the manufacture of new tyres, rubber products, and plastics - Steel for metal recycling - Biogenic pyrolysis oil, which will be processed through Geelong Refinery to produce low-carbon intensity fuels We're importing a shipment of tyre pyrolysis oil produced using Klean Industries' innovative technology to the Geelong Refinery. It's an important step in proving the processing of tyre pyrolysis oil at scale in the refinery and is another significant milestone in our co-processing trials, as part of our commitment to creating lower carbon fuels and products. #lowercarbon #tyrepyrolysisoil #VivaEnergyHub

Horsham Rural City Council has reported a rise in illegal tyre dumping this week on the city's outskirts and has increased patrols to address the issue. We appreciate their efforts in tackling this challenge. Unfortunately, illegally dumped tyres in our communities are not uncommon. Illegally dumped tyres create environmental risks, increase fire hazards, and place unnecessary costs on local councils. Responsible disposal is essential to keeping tyres in the resource recovery system, where they can be repurposed into valuable new products. If you come across dumped tyres, you can help by reporting them via the Snap Send Solve app; available to download from the Apple or Google Play store. With funding from Tyre Stewardship Australia's Market Development Fund, the Forest Products Innovation (FPI) team at Queensland Department of Primary Industries (QDPI) has successfully developed rubberised particleboard: a game-changing product that replaces up to 30% of wood with crumb rubber. ✅ Diverts waste tyres from landfill while reducing reliance on domestic timber resources. ✅ Delivers gained benefits of improved moisture resistance, termite resistance, and acoustic performance. ✅ Scaled for impact: if widely adopted, this particleboard could potentially consume 80,000+ tonnes of crumb rubber annually. This project demonstrates a major step toward creating new end markets for tyre-derived materials and strengthening Australia’s resource recovery sector. A huge thank you to our partners, recyclers and suppliers driving this innovation: Forest Products Innovation | Queensland Department of Primary Industries | Laminex Australia | Chip Tyre Pty Ltd | Tyrecycle | Tammie Miller 📢 Read the full case study here: https://lnkd.in/ddMepEKd #ReinventingTheWheelForGood #TSAMarketDevelopmentFund #CircularEconomy #ResourceRecovery #SustainableInnovation
