NATIONAL CHAMPIONS🇦🇺🏆 Over the weekend the WASM wombats competed at the national mining games in Queensland. We are thrilled to announce that our MENS B team took home a national championship with a fantastic performance at Saturdays competition. A huge congratulations to our CO-ED team for placing third overall as well as taking a victory, finishing 1st overall in the airleg competition. Well done to our MENS A teams for coming a close second overall and taking home first place medals in Mucking, Swede Saw and Track Set !! We would also like to congratulate the AusIMM UWA Student Chapter Co-Ed team for finishing 1st overall in there division!! 📢 Announcement 📢 Over last weekend the Wombats held their AGM to officially conclude the 2023-24 season, vote in the new committee and rev everyone up for what will undoubtedly be another stellar year for the 'Bats. As such, it comes time for the '23-24 committee to sign off and hand over the reigns to those who have been entrusted with the club. The fine ladies & gentleman of this committee can hold their heads high and be proud of what they were able to achieve, from record student participation to the largest international Wombat touring party and our first women's team in four years, they have led with aplomb and their efforts certainly haven't gone unnoticed. Congratulations to Duncan Erasmus for winning the Dave Grimsley Award for The Most Improved Wombat Of The Year. Well done! This time last year I stated, "If we can leave the club in a better place than we found it, however you wish to measure it, I'd call that a success." -- I believe we've been able to achieve just that. Last week the 2023 cohort graduated from the WA School of Mines: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering in a wonderful celebration of their individual and combined efforts. Prior to donning their regalia, Ex-bats came down to Friday training to pass on valuable tips and funny stories to the new recruits. Some even blew out the cobwebs by grabbing hold of a saw or handsteel. Two of the graduating class were previous presidents, meaning we had 3 generations of Wombat Presidents in the shed at once! We hope the 2023 cohort had a fantastic weekend and may they prosper in the industry 💪

Over the weekend the WASM Wombats touched down in Perth, marking the end of their 46th Intercollegiate Mining Games journey and bringing the 2023-24 season to a close. The trip was a special one, all 23 students got a chance to experience the American way of life and explore the vastly different landscapes. For many it was their first time seeing snow!! Montana Tech - Mining Engineering put on a fantastic competition, a highlight being the livestream setup with full-time commentary, a standard that we hope is continued in future competitions. The Wombats had two goals, to defend the championship title and to introduce our newly formed teams to the rigors of IMG. Our Westgold Resources Limited Women's team placed 4th, with 5/7 possible podiums, being the first Wombats Women's team in over 4 years we're very proud of their achievement and hope it helps to encourage more women to join. Barminco Men's A were able to experience their first Intercollegiate competition. They too performed well in hostile weather conditions, with snow falling around them they were able to get a second place in hand-steel, the only team who were able to hold a torch to Montana's 'Originals'. MACA Ltd Thiess Men's C was formed to introduce the international competition to our less experienced competitors, these men should hold their heads high and be proud of what they represent and were able to produce. We look forward to see how they progress through the ranks. For the Diggers & Dealers Mining Forum Men's B team, affectionally known as the 'Inglorious Wombats', it would be their last outing. Having been formed in 2022 and being the 2023 men's champions, there was only one goal. By the lunchtime break, the team needed a couple results to go their way, unfortunately it wasn't to be and the gents came away with a hard fought 2nd place. You can bet your bottom dollar that this team will be the Alumni team to beat when the competition returns to Kalgoorlie. Without the support of the amazing companies and local legends that partner with the WASM Wombats year after year, opportunities such as these would seize to exist. Not only do the games allow for comradery amongst all, it also provides a sensational opportunity to network with industry leaders from different areas of the globe, a very unique attribute. Our very own WASM Wombats Mining Games Team has been making waves at the 46th Intercollegiate Mining Games in Butte, Montana, USA! Despite the freezing weather conditions of Butte, the Westgold Resources Limited Wombats Women's team rocked the competition on Friday, securing Top 3 spots in an impressive 5 events (Mucking, Gold Panning, Swede Saw, Jacking and Hand Steel)! But our excitement doesn't stop there – they're gearing up for the final event: Survey on Saturday, which will determine the overall leaderboard.
