🌟 Thank You to Our Amazing Role Models! 🌟 We are incredibly grateful to all the dedicated role models who volunteer their time with Techtrails, inspiring young girls to pursue STEM subjects. Your passion and commitment make a lasting impact! 📣 Here's what Kara Symes, one of our role models, had to say: "Last Friday night, PTA held our annual Arrows awards night, and I was completely surprised and honored to receive the PTA Gold Arrow for 2024 – a.k.a Employee of the Year. Part of the reason why I was recognised was my involvement with Techtrails, going into schools and speaking to girls about my career and the railway. Just want to say a HUGE THANK YOU for allowing me to be involved in this program – it’s a genuine joy to tell young women about what I do and hopefully inspire them to consider a career in STEM. Definitely fills my cup every single time! Words can’t express how grateful I am to be involved in the wonderful work you do!" 📣 Let's amplify Kara's testimonial and spread the message far and wide! 💌 Ready to dive deeper into the tech universe? 🚀 Continuing from our amazing Techtrails Incursion at KELMSCOTT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL today. 🥰💜 Here's a glimpse of the rest of the amazing sessions the students participated in, ending the day with a Q&A session with our speakers: 1.👷♀️ Kara Symes presented to the students how signalling train detection works with an exciting hands-on activity. The students explored the fascinating world of train signalling and detection by experimenting with their very own DC track circuit! They learned about the principles of how trains are detected on tracks, which is crucial for ensuring safe and efficient rail operations. Finally, she shared some handy advice for a career in engineering, all learned through her personal experience! 🚂 2. 🧬 Joshua Guy engaged the students in a workshop called "Crash Test Rating" to help them gain practical experience in STEM fields, working together to solve real-world problems. The students got hands-on with STEM and engaged with 21st-century skills. Through collaboration and innovative thinking, they designed and tested prototypes that contribute to safer roads. This activity helped challenge their preconceptions of what STEM entails. 🏎️ 3. 👩🏫 Leila Saba’s session focused on the topic of how she ended up in IT, with a theme centered around unusual pathways. Until the age of 19 and a half, Leila was on a clear and firm trajectory toward becoming a human rights lawyer. However, through a series of choices and circumstances, she ended up as a manager in IT, specifically in the technology aspect of STEM. The session invited students to discover what happened at different times and provided them with a chance to guess and imagine what she might have done as each part of the story unfolded. Thank you to these amazing Role Models and Allies for making the day so exciting for the students and to our volunteers Andrea Riveros, Esther Lintern, Ardra Vikas, & Sandi M. for making the day possible. 🎉 A huge thank you to the Department of Industry, Science and Resources for making this initiative possible.
