Close to 500 people packed the Souths Juniors auditorium last Wednesday for the annual South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) Older Persons’ Mental Health Services Forum, with a goal of changing the narrative on #ageing. In partnership with Randwick City Council and CHeBA, this free event offered practical strategies for older people and featured an impressive lineup of experts, including: CHeBA's Professor Henry Brodaty AO, Senior Research Fellow at UNSW Dr Lindsay Wu, Macquarie University’s Professor of Clinical Psychology Viviana Wuthrich, 86 year old dance teacher Robina Beard, and Author and Clinical Psychologist Melissa Levi. 🔬 How can we accelerate breakthroughs in #brainhealth research? By improving access to critical #data. One major challenge researchers face is sourcing relevant data that meets specific research needs. The process often involves complicated requirements, extensive administration and long waiting periods. To address these challenges, our research team has developed a new tool - the Data Repository Explorer, designed to streamline data access and boost potential discoveries. This innovative solution, created by CHeBA's Rory Chen, was recently published in the Journal of Open Source Software. The app simplifies the process of accessing research data held in repositories, opening the door for faster and more impactful scientific breakthroughs. 🔗 Discover more about how this tool is changing the game in #dementia research: https://bit.ly/3BWsGFE UNSW UNSW Medicine & Health Vibeke Catts Ashleigh Vella Perminder Sachdev #DementiaResearch #DataAccess #CHeBA

We are delighted to share that CHeBA Research Fellow Dr Adith Mohan and his team at the Mindgardens Neuroscience Network FND Clinic have been announced as a finalist in the prestigious 2024 NSW Premier's Awards, for bridging a gap in care-provision for a vulnerable group with high rates of physical and mental health morbidity, disability and healthcare needs. A key component of the Clinic is an additional research component led through CHeBA, which addresses the fundamental gap in information and education for patients and their clinicians around FND. The Clinic is one of just five finalists in the Highest quality healthcare category and reflects the significant impact the Clinic has had on the lives of people living with Functional Neurological Disorders. 🚨 New research alert: #stroke and cognitive decline Did you know that stroke triggers immediate and accelerated long-term #cognitivedecline? New research from CHeBA, led by Research Associate Jess Lo and published in JAMA Network Open, reveals how stroke affects thinking, memory, and decision-making in older adults. Many stroke survivors go on to develop vascular dementia, the second most common type of dementia. This study highlights the need to target modifiable risk factors to reduce the risk of both stroke and #dementia. 🔗 Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/47NPe7z UNSW UNSW Medicine & Health John Crawford Darren Lipnicki Nicole Kochan Perminder Sachdev #strokeawareness #brainhealth #CHeBA

A heartfelt thank you to Liane Fletcher and Antonia Haralambis for organising their second A Dementia Conversation event, held in the beautiful setting of a private home in Vaucluse. With 80 attendees, the event brought the community together in support of dementia research. With many guests navigating the experience of a loved one’s diagnosis of dementia, there was a focus on the importance of opening the conversation of #dementia. CHeBA Co-Director Professor Henry Brodaty delivered an insightful talk on behaviour change, and highlighted both risk and protective factors for dementia, while Dr Karen Mather discussed the Maintain Your Brain study and the crucial role of #genomics and #epigenomics in understanding brain health. All funds raised from the event were generously directed towards the Maintain Your Brain study, advancing our collective effort to improve brain health and prevent cognitive decline. #dementiaresearch #maintainyourbrain #brainhealth #CHeBA
