Leading engagement on a European circular bioeconomy
About us
The Biobased Industries Consortium or BIC is a European association that was established in 2012 to collectively represent the private sector in a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for the Bio-based Industries with the EU - the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU). BIC's membership now includes more than 200 member companies (large and small) and includes growing representation from new actors engaged in the bioeconomy across the full value chain e.g. brand owners. BIC also has around 165 associate members including Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs), universities, European associations and organisations. Technology Platforms (ETPs), public institutions, regional organisations and private banks. It is also host to a unique mix of sectors from agri-food, marine and aquatic, technology providers, the forest and paper-based sector, chemicals and materials, waste, energy and brand owners.

BIC and Zero Waste Europe are hosting this free webinar to discuss the huge potential for valorising bio-waste, which can be a feedstock for the bio-based industries. Ahead of the publication of our new report (which details collection systems in various European countries, best practices and commercial uses) in the webinar we'll be discussing bio-waste with business (TripleW), stakeholders (ZERO - ASSOCIAÇÃO SISTEMA TERRESTRE SUSTENTÁVEL) and a representative from the European Commission's DG Environment (EU Environment and Climate). 📆 ⏰ BIC has teamed up with Zero Waste Europe to offer a free webinar on bio-waste on 5 November, 10:00-11:30 CET. Europe has a vast untapped potential for collecting, treating, and valorising bio-waste today. Since January 1st 2024, it is mandatory for EU Member States to separately collect bio-waste. But many countries have poor models for collecting it, therefore masses of this bio-waste that could be used in bio-based products and processes goes unused. We'll soon be releasing our joint study on the situation, including the current situation in each Member State (plus the UK and Norway). Ahead of that, join our webinar to get some insights from business, stakeholders and politicians including ZWE's Scientific Committee Chair Enzo Favoino, sustainability NGO ZERO - ASSOCIAÇÃO SISTEMA TERRESTRE SUSTENTÁVEL and TripleW, who focus on circular waste–to-product solutions with food waste. Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) reposted this
BIC's Marco Rupp hosted a workshop at the Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS2024) in Nairobi, Kenya, yesterday. The focus was on key elements for blueprints for private-public cooperation at regional, national and global levels. The workshop featured six existing types of private-public cooperation in six regions of world, hearing from Shira Mukiibi, Khemmathin (Martin) Lueangwattanapong, India Hook-Barnard, PhD, Lilia Stubrin, Marta Gomez San Juan, Lev Neretin and Marco, who was able to speak about BIC's partnership with the European Commission - the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). Participants agreed that public private cooperation is a driver for (re)industrialisation and can be used to to set-up new bio-based industrial ecosystems, transitioning away from fossil-based industry systems. And these three "Fs" are key to a blueprint for private-public cooperation - Focus, Format and Funding! Follow-up work will include recommendations for defining and developing blueprints. #GBS2024 #biobased mary maxon Peter Wehrheim Wataru Mizunashi Julius Ecuru

BIC's Dirk Carrez and Samuele Ambrosetti attended the grand opening of the world's first commercial facility for the production of furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from plant-based sugars. The FDCA flagship plant in Delfzijl was opened by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands on 22 October. The faciltity received funding from our previous public-private partnership with the European Commission - the BBI JU, predecessor of the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). Known as the PEFerence project, the flagship plant is expected to produce 5 kilotons of bio-based FDCA. FDCA can be the building block for a wide range of chemicals and polymers, especially PEF (polyethylene furanoate), a 100% bio-based polyester used to make bottles, films and fibres. BIC member Avantium is at the head of the PEFerence consortium. Other partners include: nova-Institut GmbH; Worley; Henkel; Kebony; Spinverse; Tereos; the LEGO Group; Kronenbourg Brewery; and Carlsberg Group

BIC CEO Dirk Carrez will be at the inauguration of this flagship plant. Another great step forward in advancing Europe's #biobased capabilities!
🚀 Exciting News! – tomorrow is the day!🚀 The #H2020 project #PEFerence is thrilled to announce the official opening of 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝'𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐃𝐂𝐀 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 at Chemie Park Delfzijl in the Netherlands! 🌍 This milestone, set for 𝟐𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒, marks a pivotal step towards a sustainable, circular #bioeconomy. 🌱The new 5-kiloton FDCA plant will produce #FDCA (furan dicarboxylic acid), a building block for the 100% bio-based polyester PEF (polyethylene furanoate) used to make bottles, films and fibres. #PEF not only offers a 50% lower carbon footprint than PET but also ensures better barrier properties and can be recycled in existing PET streams or closed-loop PEF-to-PEF recycling.
