About us
UITP (Union Internationale des Transports Publics) is the International Association of Public Transport and a passionate champion of sustainable urban mobility. Established in 1885, with more than 135 years of history, it is the only worldwide network to bring together all public transport stakeholders and all sustainable transport modes. Across the globe and every day, people rely on public transport to bring them to school, to work, to sports clubs and cafés. In using public transport millions travel more sustainably, safer and actively while bringing economic benefit to their community. UITP supports the entire sector to ultimately guarantee that public transport and its workers continue to bring cities to life. Today we represent more 1,900 member companies from the fields of urban, local, regional and national mobility from more than 100 countries on all continents.

🌍 CLEVER Expert Forum – Key Highlights 🚛📊 CLEVER's Expert Forum gathered industry leaders for insightful discussions on advancing sustainable transport emission tracking. Here are some of the top takeaways from our panel sessions: ✅ Training & Capacity Building: Identified specific educational needs and stakeholder learning opportunities. ✅ Liaison with Regulators: Highlighted missing references to key U.S. regulations (e.g., LCFS). Noted gaps in EU frameworks (CSRD Directive, Ecodesign Regulation). Recommended examining incentives linked to emission factors and carbon removal legislation. ✅ Assurance & Certification: Recognized varied maturity levels and transparency issues in regulations. Emphasized precise definitions and better understanding of assurance terms (validation, verification, certification). Proposed developing practical assurance tools to boost market confidence in CLEVER’s emission factors. ✅ Goal, Scope & Fuel Pathways: Stressed importance of standardized yet flexible emission factor methods. Discussed global approaches, with clear EU-specific applicability. Prioritized existing technologies (short-term) and scalable modeling (long-term). Advocated differentiating emission factors by transport mode and regional contexts. Together, we continue to drive innovation towards sustainable and accurate emissions tracking! #CLEVERProject #SustainableTransport #EmissionFactors #Decarbonization #ClimateAction PNO Innovation (Spain) ALICE, Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe (ETP LOGISTICS) Smart Freight Centre Three o'clock ifeu - Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung Heidelberg gGmbH GreenRouter Emisia SA Meo Carbon Solutions Ricardo plc UITP ZN

What’s behind your tap-and-ride? 💳 Contributions and insights provided by our member Imededdine HOSNI from Worldline Mobility & e-Transactional Services. EMV open-loop payments have shifted public transport from tickets to ‘no’ tickets, as your own payment card or mobile device becomes the ticket. No top-ups, no queues – just an easy and secure travel. But as payment technologies advance, are some innovations a better fit for open-loop mobility than others? The answer is yes. Let’s break down what works and what doesn’t. ✅ Fit for #OpenLoopMobility ✔️ Wearable payment devices: smartphones, fitness trackers, even clothing or jewelry can now process payments (and it only takes a simple tap!). ✔️ EMV White label: PTOs and PTAs can issue their own branded EMV payment cards. This expands open-loop access to unbanked passengers while allowing authorities to implement custom fare policies. However, customer subscription is required. ✔️ SoftPOS (Software Point of Sale): smartphones or tablets become secure payment terminals, allowing passengers to tap and pay without additional hardware. Already being piloted for handheld devices and near-driver consoles, though it currently requires a semi-attended setup. ❌ Not quite ready for #OpenLoopMobility (yet!): ✖️ QR Payments: while useful for Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs), QR codes aren’t fast enough for high-traffic transit gates, potentially causing delays and congestion. ✖️ Instant Payments (e.g., Wero): these payments are made directly between two bank accounts. They are not eligible for now as an open-loop payment option. ✖️ CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency): it is the digital form of a country’s fiat currency issued and regulated by the central bank. It is not yet fit for open-loop payments, but the Digital Euro for example is exploring pay per use use cases. Speed, security, and ease of use remain key to public transport payments. While some innovations seamlessly integrate into open-loop systems, others need further development to support the high-speed, high-volume demands of mass public transport.
