Cancer has turned my world upside down.
Just like it has for many of you.
The first time was when I was eight years old, and my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer.
The second time was when I was 19 years old, and my mum was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. She died a year later.
And in the summer of 2016, our youngest son was diagnosed with liver cancer, just a week after his first birthday.
In December 2021, we received the wonderful news that he was out of the woods. Those years were not easy especially at the beginning, yet we're beyond grateful to the exceptional doctors and nurses at the Princes Máxima Centrum and UMCG.
There is no greater worry as a parent than having a sick child. I know not everyone is as fortunate as us, so today I’m thinking of all children going through this, their parents and the parents who have lost their children to this horrible disease.
This fight is far from over. And, of course, it is not only kids. Cancer affects millions of adults every year. We need more prevention, earlier detection, and increased research into innovative cancer treatments for everyone.
PS: This bracelet supports the fight against kids’ cancer in the Netherlands (Vereniging Kinderkanker Nederland). I got it in 2016, and I have never taken it off since. I keep it as a daily reminder.
