The new Sage flagship in Atlanta is open. This is our ninth new workplace (yes, ninth) since June last year, with four more opening at the end of this year. We are, as they say, on a roll. Part workplace, part Discovery Centre, in a timber-framed building in one of the most energised areas of the city. In my 33 years in the business of workplace, it’s one of the workplaces I am most proud of. I feel privileged to have had a part in shaping it. Naturally, it’s been a huge team effort. It wouldn’t be possible to mention everyone here, but a small group of amazing colleagues have been on the rollercoaster with me for most or all of it: Nicci Bird Florrie Chow Almudena Cruz Rob Lowy Brandon Bardowsky Tony Grewal Heather Shirah Beverly Parker I will leave the pictures to do the rest of the talking.

The world's tallest all-wood tower in a high seismic zone: Ronald McDonald House's Willow House in Vancouver. This project features a 12 story mass timber structure utilizing coupled CLT shear walls linked with steel seismic “fuses”, the first use of this seismic system world-wide. At our Mass Timber Conference pavilion in Portland this week, we had the opportunity to create a mockup of the structural systems depicted in this video. Notably, the mockup was entirely created by our in-house carpenters with a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern CNC machining techniques. The seismic design concepts for this tower were developed by our structural engineers Justin Brown, Ben Moerman, and Wenchen Dong during their PhD research under the supervision of Minghao Li, Alessandro Palermo, Stefano Pampanin, Francesco Sarti, Tobias Smith, and Angela Liu at the University of Canterbury. Special thanks also to the many in our office and shop who have contributed to this project and mockup! Willow House will embody sustainability while creating a warm, restorative environment for families facing medical crises. The net-zero carbon building will feature studio, one- and two-bedroom suites with private kitchenettes, shared community spaces, and wellness programs. Willow House will stand as a legacy of care, resilience, and environmental responsibility. Come by Booth 544 at the Oregon Convention Center today and tomorrow to learn more! • "AI isn’t going to replace designers — it’s going to supercharge them.” That’s one of the big ideas we’ll be exploring at this week’s International Mass Timber Conference! Lucas Epp is part of a Keynote panel - alongside Paul King, Scott Francisco, and Amy Heilig, PE, moderated by Will Hildesley - where they will dig into how AI can flatten 70 years of learning into 10, revolutionize design workflows, and unlock entirely new possibilities for mass timber construction. Join us Thursday, 8–9:15 AM in the main hall to hear how next-gen AEC tech can: 👉Turn “computer-limited-design" into design tools which unleash creativity 👉Tackle cost, carbon, and supply barriers more effectively 👉Accelerate global adoption of low-carbon materials Whether you’re an AI skeptic or a design-tech champion, this conversation will reshape how you think about building better, not just building with timber.  Hope to see you there! We’re taking a closer look at the timber pergola at 35 Stone (now CornerStone). What inspired the design? Why was Alaskan Yellow Cedar the timber of choice? How do you fabricate and install a structure like this? And how do bees fit into the story? The design team broke it all down for us: Concept: Inspired by the hexagonal honeycomb structures, the team took a biomimetic approach to create an artistic timber pergola at the main building entrance. This welcoming, human-scaled feature highlights mass timber as a key element of the project while supporting the Living Future Petal Certification goals. Fittingly, four colonies of bees will move into an apiary on the north end of the building’s rooftop this spring, supporting the Urban Agriculture Imperative of the Living Building Challenge. Collaboration: In collaboration with Coughlin Porter Lundeen and StructureCraft, the design was refined to simplify connection points and incorporate feature lighting. To improve durability, Douglas Fir glulam beams were replaced replaced with Alaskan Yellow Cedar, a more robust timber species material better suited for the PNW elements. A metal cap conceals wiring for integrated lighting and prevents water pooling, ensuring the pergola withstands the elements for years. Fabrication: StructureCraft engineered, fabricated, and assembled the pergola, ensuring precision at every stage. Each CNC-machined component was test-fittedfittest fit in the shop-house before being carefully transported in custom-built jigs and assembled on- site. Their oversight kept the structure true to its design intent, both visually and structurally. Installation: Sellen Construction lifted and installed the prefabricated elements, streamlining construction. Standing at the building’s entrance, the pergola serves as a defining feature of the project, seamlessly integrating craftsmanship, sustainability and design. Be sure to check it out next time you’re passing by CornerStone! #biophilicdesign #sustainability #masstimber

✈️ Aerospace meets #MassTimber 🌲 KF Aerospace Centre 🌏 Kelowna, Canada   The architectural inspiration behind the KF Centre's design is strongly rooted in the vision of KF Aerospace founder Barry Lapointe to create a building that “feels like a plane” & incorporates extensive use of wood.   "To accommodate the founder’s wish to use as much wood as possible, the architect Meiklejohn Architects Inc. designed the 5,574-m2 (60,000-sf) mass timber building to incorporate expansive roof structures made of wooden trusses, which sweep and tilt." - Meiklejohn Architects Inc.   😲 Completed in 2022, this amazing aerospace mass timber feat is jaw dropping.   ☑️ The resulting roof structure is reminiscent of a complex curved wing shape, complete with elements like spars, trusses, and cables   ☑️ The design team developed a concept for spar trusses in the hangar wings modeled after World War II-era Spitfire fighter planes   ☑️ The height of the second floor was intentionally set to allow visitors to observe aircraft on the runway without obstruction.   "The roof panel trusses of the hub structure were than fabricated in our shop, each consisting of a DLT top chord, two steel queenposts and a cable. The curvature was achieved by letting the DLT panels 'sag' over two middle supported jigs, before installing the cable and locking the curvature in place by tensioning the cables." - DowelLam   🏆 Awards: 2023 Award of Merit from Engineering News Record - Global 2023 Sansin Sponsorship Award from the Wood Design & Building Awards 2023 Outstanding Structure - SEE Awards (Spiral Stair) from the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations   👷🏽 Project Team: GHL DowelLam KF Aerospace StructureCraft Grizzly Metal Fab West Manufacturing Sawchuk Developments Powerlift of Minneapolis Meiklejohn Architects Inc. • Imagine the world's tallest all-wood tower in a high seismic zone: a 12 story mass timber structure utilizing coupled CLT shear walls, the first use of this seismic system world-wide. We’re excited to reveal a full scale structural mockup of this tower in collaboration with MGA | Michael Green Architecture at our Mass Timber Conference pavilion in Portland next week! The CLT shear walls are linked with steel seismic “fuses” and feature both the structural and architectural story of the project, CNC'd into the sides of the CLT. For Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon’s new tall timber Willow House in Vancouver, we had the opportunity to create this mockup of the larger building featuring the main lateral system concept, as well as the project’s community and sustainability focus. Notably, this mockup was entirely created by our in-house carpenters with a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern CNC machining techniques. Each face of the CLT walls showcases a story – the structural details CNC’d into black paint, and the architectural story CNC’d into the raw Douglas Fir CLT. We thank the House as well as MGA for allowing us to exercise our passion in tall timber engineering and craftsmanship, creating something elegant and beautiful for thousands to experience. Be sure to check out the mockup alongside demonstrations of our latest Branch 3D technology (including a special software launch to be announced next week!). All this and more on display in Booth 544 at the Oregon Convention Center on March 25-27.
