Footage from the Almirante Viel’s second voyage to Antarctica. This was taken on February 23rd at Marguerite Bay as we tested the vessel’s performance in ice trials. We ran the constant speed/constant power test at 4 ship speeds and took various measurements of mechanical, electrical, navigational, ice, and environmental conditions. We then performed the 360-degree turning circle test. ASMAR | Armada de Chile #icetrials #icebreakers #Antarctica #Chile #shipdesign #vesselperformance

We are excited to share our participation in the Almirante Viel’s second journey to Antarctica – this time with Jason DSouza, B.Eng, Google PMP on board the vessel! He set sail February 16th from Punta Arenas, Chile and the team braved the Drake Passage, crossed the 66th parallel, endured ice trials in Marguerite Bay, completed resupply and logistics missions at Carvajal Base, Yelcho Base, Fildes Bay/George Island bases, Arturo Prat Base and O’Higgins base, and conducted a hydrographic survey in Snow Bay. As you can see, the beauty of Antarctica never ceases to amaze those who visit but we were quickly reminded of the unpredictable weather and challenging environment, experiencing freezing rain and choppy seas throughout the journey. Thank you to ASMAR and the Armada de Chile for having us on board as we tested the vessel’s performance in harsh ice conditions, gathered valuable data to verify design considerations and obtained vessel performance feedback which is a vital part of the design process. #icebreakers #Antarctica #icetrials #shipdesign #navalarchitecture #marineengineering #Chile

Simon Witt, Development Team Manager, embarked on an extraordinary 22-day journey to Antarctica aboard the Almirante Viel, a Chilean Navy icebreaker designed by Vard Marine Inc and built at ASMAR Talcahuano Shipyard. This vessel is a historic milestone - the largest ever built by ASMAR and the first icebreaker of its kind constructed in South America. On January 9th, Simon set sail to witness its ice trials firsthand, experiencing how the vessel performs in one of the most extreme environments. 🌊 Enjoy the breathtaking scenery he has experienced so far. 👇 📣 At VARD, we have a long history of designing and building ice-class vessels, from advanced polar icebreakers to specialized expedition ships. Our expertise in integrated shipbuilding and technology ensures vessels can navigate, operate, and perform efficiently in the world’s harshest conditions.
