About us

We are an award-winning architectural partnership based in Toronto. Creating distinctive buildings of lasting value for more than 60 years. The Webb Zerafa Menkes Housden Partnership was established in 1961 by four associates of the iconic Canadian architect, Peter Dickinson. After Peter’s untimely passing, and with commissions to complete for Izzy Sharp of Four Seasons Hotel and Kenneth Rotenberg of Y&R Properties, our new firm was founded and went on to design its first modernist landmark projects in Toronto. Through the 1960s and '70s, we designed such iconic buildings as the CN Tower, the Royal Bank Plaza, and multiple signature office buildings in downtown Toronto and Calgary. Through the 1980s and '90s, WZMH’s work followed its clients, expanding into the USA, the Middle East, and China. After 60+ years and renamed as WZMH Architects, the firm has evolved from its modest roots to a global force in architectural design, with a showcase of buildings in every large Canadian city and many throughout the world. Built on innovative design, technical expertise and dynamic leadership, the firm’s experience includes significant Institutional, Residential, Corporate, Hospitality and Recreational projects in Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Since its inception, WZMH has evolved into a practice of over 150 professionals combining individual creativity and experience with the efficiency and reliability of a major architectural firm. WZMH strives to achieve excellence in Architecture through a respect for cooperative client relations and a commitment to value and sustainable construction practices. Inspired by Toronto’s historic brick-and-beam architecture, T3 Bayside is a contemporary take on a mass timber workplace that uses sustainably sourced FSC-certified timber to store over 3,886 metric tons of carbon dioxide. With its stepped façade and expansive glazing, the building targets LEED Gold and WELL Certification, promoting holistic sustainability and occupant wellness. Tiered lounges, fitness facilities, and floors that can adapt to future double-height spaces all combine to offer a flexible and amenity-rich modern workplace. Located along the waterfront, T3 Bayside connects to parks, trails and transit, integrating seamlessly into the vibrant Bayside community and wider city beyond. 📸 Tom Arban #T3bayside #waterfrontcommunity #masstimber #sustainablebuildings #wzmh #wzmharchitects #3XN #Hines

Last week WZMH staff took to the streets for our annual biking and walking tour of downtown Toronto’s architectural gems! The biking group, led by Jeffrey Leong-Poi, Len Abelman and Moran Olsha, explored Waterfront projects including the Cherry Street Bridges, while the walking group, guided by Supreet Barhay, Robert Shortt and Aminesh Nigam visited financial district sites including 76 Adelaide Street West and Scotia Plaza. Both groups ended their tour at The Well before heading to our Summer Social at Amsterdam Brewery for a fun-filled evening. A great day of architecture, exercise, and team building! #wzmh #wzmharchitects #walkingtour #bikingtour #officesocial #teambuilding #workandplay Aminesh Nigam Claudia Di Costanzo Rosario Salvador Alexeis Ramos Anusha Subramanian Luigi Trama Parastoo Varshosaz Anastasiia Bielohryvtseva Kateryna Kost Luisa De los Santos Oleksandr Nenenko Khrystyna Karkhut Tenisha Johnson Tommy Abelman Joses Tsoi

With the growing disparity between income and house prices, affordable housing solutions are more crucial than ever. Plughome is an off-grid sustainable, adaptable, and cost-effective microhome that was recently submitted for a design competition that aims to tackle this pressing issue. The modular design includes customizable plug-and-play units, enhancing both functionality and comfort with foldable furniture ideal for young professionals, singles, or for flexible living needs. Plughome is designed to seamlessly integrate into local communities, offering versatile configurations and multi-story options to create spaces tailored to community needs. Designed for quick assembly and scalability, it features advanced materials like CLT+Kingspan, and Integrated Metal Panels(IMP), ensuring energy efficiency and robust construction. The advanced façade design reduces thermal bridging and fosters social interaction through communal spaces, making this microhome a pioneering solution for urban living challenges. #designcompetition #wzmharchitects #wzmh Kingspan Group

We are excited to see the 2 Bloor project completed! This repositioning project involves the redesign of 60,000ft² of public and commercial space at the concourse, ground, and second floors, creating street-level prominence while enhancing the pedestrian experience and alleviating daily congestion. The architectural design responds to high pedestrian density and varying view exposures by stepping back the façade to create relief areas and projecting out at strategic points to engage pedestrians. Our design team used a custom in-house algorithmic plug-in to inform the architectural massing and articulation which features a double-glazed curtain wall system with reinforced structural mullions, high-efficiency glazing panels, and custom aluminum mullions with extended caps. We are proud to contribute to the vision of a meaningful pedestrian experience with a sense of purposeful continuity through this project. #2Bloor #wzmh #wzmharchitects

Taking advantage of the site’s location within the Health Sciences District and its proximity to higher-order transit, the proposed transit supportive development will complement other approved and proposed developments within the Health Sciences District, helping to achieve a complete and connected community for workers, patients and visitors within the District. The proposed development is supportive of numerous policy directions set out in the Provincial Policy Statement, the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, the City of Toronto Official Plan and the Downtown Secondary Plan, all of which promote the efficient use of land and infrastructure within built-up areas, and specifically in proximity to higher order public transit. With a focus on heritage retention and sustainability, the development retains the civic minded John C. Parkin building while incorporating an energy-efficient residential tower and providing improvements to the street scape with green infrastructure and sitting areas. Twice receiving unanimous support from the Toronto Design Review Panel, this 64-storey development sets a new precedent for heritage retention along this major civic corridor. #wzmh #wzmharchitects

SOSA’s Cross Sections event was an inspiring and insightful opportunity to hear from various industry leaders and experts, including WZMH Principal, Supreet Barhay and Associate Principal Ted DuArte. Supreet's panel provided a comprehensive look at the pre-construction phase of projects, while Ted delivered important insights on Contract Administration. WZMH is a proud supporter of SOSA - Society of South Asian Architects, Canada and we look forward to participating and collaborating in other similar events in the near future. #dei #mentorship #training #wzmh #wzmharchitects
