A new project led by Dr. Igor Grossmann was awarded $1.5 million in funding from the Templeton World Charity Foundation to study wisdom and standards of wise judgment 🎉 “Studying wisdom is important because it provides insights into how people make decisions in complex, uncertain situations that don't have clear solutions, especially when these situations are influenced by cultural, moral, and interpersonal factors,” says Grossmann. Meet Ann Gordon, a passionate Arts and Business co-op student who turned her love for community-building into a series of impactful events for the University of Waterloo Faculty of Arts and was the recipient of the 2024 Arts Award for Excellence in Service. During her co-op terms, Ann created a variety of initiatives to foster connection and support among students, many of whom were transitioning back to in-person learning. From organizing stress-relief events featuring therapy dogs and creative activities, to planning a comprehensive Student Resource Fair, she ensured that students could engage at their own pace and access the resources they needed to thrive. Ann's leadership, empathy, and innovative approach to event planning not only helped build a stronger sense of community in the Faculty of Arts but also connected students to valuable mental health and academic supports. Her work exemplifies the power of student-driven leadership in making a lasting difference. More: https://lnkd.in/gd9eHS4S | #UWaterloo #BackToSchool

Congratulations to our Mock Trial Club on winning their first competition! 🏆 "Something I’ve learned through mock trialing is you only really get better through your losses. That's the mentality that mock trial brings – that losing is a part of life, and if you're not losing, you're not growing." "The decision of the provincial government to close the Ontario Science Centre is short-sighted and a significant blow to public engagement with science and technology. This decision not only shutters a key resource for science education, it also undermines efforts to build public trust in science." Read more from Drs. Economic inequality remains a pervasive issue, demanding the attention of scholars, policymakers and activists worldwide. Dr. Francisco Gonzalez, a professor in the University of Waterloo Faculty of Arts, brings a nuanced perspective to this enduring problem. "Today's levels of within-country inequality are excessive and reflect unequal opportunities," says Dr. Gonzalez. His research explores the pivotal role of the welfare state, equitable access to education, and progressive tax policies in mitigating inequality. Addressing these factors not only fosters social cohesion but also promotes economic justice. Full Story: https://lnkd.in/gZVHFZeD | #UWaterloo #SolvingTheCrisis

Recently, a team of 11 undergraduate students at Waterloo participated in Canada’s first microgravity research competition for students, the Canadian Reduced Gravity Experiment Design Challenge (CAN-RGX), where they presented their research at the Canadian Space Agency headquarters in Longueuil, Quebec and won the Overall Excellence Award. The competition offers the opportunity for post-secondary students to design, build and test a scientific payload aboard the National Research Council of Canada’s Falcon 20 — a twin-engine jet that has been modified for use in microgravity experiments in association with the Canadian Space Agency. 🔗Learn more: https://bit.ly/3AfIKBT University of Waterloo Faculty of Arts University of Waterloo Faculty of Engineering

“Age, however, isn’t the only factor in an athlete’s peak. What’s really exciting is that we also found that knowing it’s an Olympic year actually helps predict an athlete’s performance,” noted study co-author Matthew Chow, an undergraduate economics student.
