🌐 In keeping with our continuous efforts to build meaningful collaborations globally, GESDA collaborated with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs' Youth for Biosecurity Fellowship in Geneva to host the fellows and UNODA colleagues for a recent briefing on #science #anticipation and #diplomacy. 🔆The fellows embarked on a hands-on exercise with a simulation game on the topic of #synthetic #biology and antimicrobial resistance, role playing as stakeholders with competing interests who must negotiate both to reach common understandings and to avoid a hypothetical health and economic crisis. 💡The exercise deepened their knowledge of science and diplomacy, and how to working together on innovative solutions for multi-stakeholder anticipatory governance. A few takeaways: ✔️Science anticipation is essential in the governance of emerging technologies and in maximizing the positive impacts of these technologies for everyone. ✔️Science anticipation is fundamental for taking preventive measures before crises materialize, helping policymakers and diplomats be better prepared to deal with the uncertainty of rapid scientific and technological developments. ✔️ Inaction can exacerbate inequalities and create missed opportunities for people to benefit from the promise of scientific breakthroughs. ✔️To be future-proof, science diplomacy must be anticipatory, action-oriented, and supportive of strong and inclusive public-private partnerships.
