Yesterday, IonQ celebrated the delivery of its first overseas ion trap to the Switzerland-based QuantumBasel facility, marking a key milestone in the buildout of a joint Quantum Innovation Hub for EMEA. IonQ specialists working out of IonQ’s Basel headquarters were on site to receive the trap, which they will install over the coming months. Delivery of the ion trap puts quantum computing one step closer for the European technology community, government agencies, and research institutions, and opens the door for the development of novel quantum applications. The chip has arrived! Yesterday, we welcomed the IonQ chip for Switzerland's first commercially viable quantum computer at QuantumBasel, on the uptownBasel campus. This milestone sets the stage for the inauguration of the physical system at the end of 2024 and it is an important step towards sovereign access to hardware. - for Switzerland - for industry and academic partners - for startups This step strengthens our position as a neutral Quantum Computing and AI hub and international innovation ecosystem. It complements our established quantum computing cloud access through our additional technology partners. Why does it matter?  Quantum computing has the potential to deliver solutions to complex optimization and simulation problems, as well as improve machine learning - all while being more energy-efficient than traditional systems.
