Long Read Event Recap: Day 2 On the second day of the event, it was mentioned that cities produce about 70% of the gases that contribute to climate change. This sparked talks about why it's so important to build cities that can handle things like climate change, more people moving in, and changes in society and the economy. They also talked about how Lagos has more than 200 slums, and around 123,000 people come to the city every year. To try to stop more slums from forming, they suggested using the PPP (People, Public, Private) approach. This means everyone—regular people, the government, and businesses—should work together to create better places for people to live outside of Lagos and try to stop so many people from moving there. The second half of the day featured the most exciting breakout session I have attended this year. Moderated by the managing director of Urban Shelter Limited Saadiya Aliyu, the panellists were the managing director of Modern Shelter Systems and Services Limited, Abdulmalik Mahdi, the President of NIGERIAN INSTITUTE OF QUANTITY SURVEYORS, Kene Christopher Nzekwe, the CEO Green Building Council Cameroon NWANCHA Roger TIKUM and also, the regional coordinator for Africa World Green Building Council, Oloo Adhiambo This session, themed "Strategies for Affordable, Sustainable, and Climate-Resilient Housing in Africa," explored various ways to engage the community in sustainable development. Key strategies included community buy-in and collaboration, participatory simulation, transparent information sharing, and accountability. The discussion also covered the pillars of sustainability: ecological responsibility, social solidarity, and cultural considerations. We also discussed the role of the government in ensuring sustainable development. Suggestions included removing VAT for green buildings to encourage more people to go green. Topics like tax reform, land use, planning for sustainability, and creating an enabling environment were also discussed. The summit emphasied the need for increased awareness in Nigeria. The general public needs to be more informed about housing policies and ways to explore energy-saving measures in their daily lives. Overall, the summit provided a wealth of knowledge and practical strategies for advancing sustainable development in Nigeria and across Africa. Thank you to the organisers!
