🌍 COP29 begins next week, do you know what to expect? The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29 Azerbaijan) of the UNFCCC is convening 11 November in Baku, Azerbaijan, to address urgent global climate action. The recent UN Emissions Gap Report 2024 warns that the 1.5°C temperature target could soon be out of reach unless immediate emissions reductions are implemented. Now, more than ever, collaboration among political leaders and private sector stakeholders committed to sustainable climate solutions is essential. From climate finance to carbon markets and global cooperation, here are some of the key issues to be discussed: 📑 Article 6 will hopefully be fully operationalised after failing to be finalised last year 🌿 New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance needs to urgently be established 🌱 Loss and Damage Fund requires increased funding as well as more effective management 🌐 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are due to be updated in 2025, so this conference will be an important round of negotiations Read the full article here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/ek8g25N5 ClimatePartner team members will be on the ground every day following key events and decisions, participating in panel discussions, and hosting events. We’ll provide updates throughout the two weeks on everything you need to know, so stay tuned! #COP29 #Baku #climateaction #ClimatePartner

Improved cookstoves: How technology improves lives and benefits the environment 🥘 Over two billion people worldwide cook using open fires and inefficient stoves fuelled by kerosene, biomass, and coal. This practice not only generates harmful household air pollution, endangering health, but also contributes to deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions from fuel collection and burning. Women and children are particularly affected, facing increased health risks from toxic smoke and spending a significant amount of their time gathering fuel, which limits their daily opportunities. Enter improved cookstoves. The benefits of this technology include: 🌱 More efficient use of thermal energy, reducing the amount of fuel needed. ⏳ Savings in both time and money spent on fuel collection. 🌿 Health improvements for women and children due to reduced household air pollution. 🌍 Climate change mitigation through lower emissions and reduced deforestation. Our tip for climate action communication: Respond to criticism with confidence 💡 Companies benefit from communicating about climate action, which fulfils the consumers’ needs and inspires other stakeholders to act. On the other hand, communicating sustainability measures transparently and clearly can sometimes be challenging. Our recommendations can help you build credibility. Today’s tip for communicating climate action is to address criticism with confidence. Even though you are trying your best to communicate clearly and transparently, being accused of greenwashing can still happen. We recommend taking criticism seriously from consumers, organisations, or other companies and accept it. Do not react hastily – get the sustainability experts in your company on board and enter a dialogue with confidence. 🍂 Remain objective, refute with evidence, or admit mistakes. Want to learn more? SBTi or CSRD? Key target-setting differences that you need to know 💡 Until the introduction of the CSRD, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) was the primary body encouraging companies to set science-based targets aligned with the Paris Agreement of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. With the CSRD now in play, many companies face the challenge of aligning these two frameworks, especially those with SBTi-validated targets or those under pressure from their value chain to commit to the SBTi. Despite the initial alignment between the SBTi and CSRD in terms of ambition (reducing emissions by 42% by 2030 and 90% by 2050), there are key differences that companies preparing to set targets should consider: base year, coverage, and sector-specific guidance.
