Today at 10:01 CET, the Sun appeared directly above Earth’s equator, marking the #SpringEquinox! 🌸 The equinox in the northern hemisphere happens twice a year, around the 20 March (spring equinox) and the 22 September (autumn equinox). At this moment, our planet is neither tilted towards nor away from the Sun, creating nearly equal day/night. 🌓 This stunning Meteosat-12 image taken earlier this morning showcases the boundary between day and night running straight through the poles. European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites. Monitoring weather and climate since 1986.
Info
EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment from space. We operate a system of meteorological satellites that observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This data is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation's member and cooperating states in Europe, as well as other users worldwide. The service provided by EUMETSAT helps to enhance and safeguard the daily lives of European citizens. They aid meteorologists in identifying and monitoring the development of potentially dangerous weather situations and in issuing timely forecasts and warnings to emergency services and local authorities, helping to mitigate the effects of severe weather and protecting human life and property. This information is also critical to the safety of air travel, shipping and road traffic, and to the daily business of farming, construction and many other industries. Account monitored Mon-Fri 09:00-18:00 CET. For general enquiries, please contact: press@eumetsat.int For user support, please contact: ops@eumetsat.int

🏔️ Glaciers are vanishing at an alarming rate: 9,000 billion tons of ice have been lost since 1975. As critical indicators of climate change, glaciers are retreating worldwide, threatening water security for billions of people. WMO is proud to partner with UNESCO on the first-ever World Day for Glaciers, in alignment with the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025 efforts. This year, World Day for Glaciers is celebrated jointly with #WorldWaterDay under the theme "Glaciers' Preservation", reinforcing the urgent and interconnected challenges of climate change and water security. 🔷 Why does this matter? Glaciers and ice sheets store 70% of the world’s freshwater, and their rapid melting accelerates sea level rise, disrupts ecosystems, and threatens communities worldwide. Protecting glaciers means safeguarding our water resources, biodiversity, and future generations. Now is the time to act. Join us in raising awareness and be part of this pivotal moment to drive #ClimateAction. 🔗 https://bit.ly/4bH2mgO #Glaciers2025 #WorldGlaciersDay

These are essential cases to better understand the role of innovation in climate adaptation. 🎬 Rosa, our science filmmaker, explores the developments behind the Climate DT and how it provides global, multi-decadal climate projections using EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU)’s supercomputing power and Europe’s leading climate models. 🌆 🌊 The Climate DT will enable the production of bespoke simulations to address ‘what-if’ questions related to the impact of various scenarios or policy decisions on the evolution of our planet. It will also create storylines of how extreme events already experienced by climate-vulnerable sectors may unfold in the coming decades –empowering decision-makers to support climate change adaptation and build resilience across Europe. 👉 Watch the episode here: https://lnkd.in/eWRZaxRa DestinE is an initiative of the EU’s DG CONNECT (EU Digital & Tech) and jointly implemented by #ECMWF, European Space Agency - ESA and EUMETSAT, along with over 100 partners across Europe. The Climate DT is developed by a strong partnership led by CSC - IT Center for Science, in close collaboration with ECMWF. #ClimateChange #DigitalTwins #ClimateAdaptation #ExtremeWeather #Innovation #ECMWF #Sustainability

When you hear the word "Cookbook," you probably think of finding the perfect recipe for your next delicious meal! However, it’s highly unlikely that you’d associate a cookbook with Earth observation satellites and data science -- but here we are! Yesterday, the Project Pythia announced the release of our “Earth Observation Data Science Cookbook”: https://lnkd.in/gxZgUmep Our cookbook is a collection of Jupyter notebooks that guide students and researchers in working with data from Earth observation satellites employing the Pangeo philosophy. These notebooks serve as recipes, providing all the essential ingredients needed to succeed in a data science project. But of course, users still have to do the "cooking" themselves! And the more creative you get, combining elements from different notebooks, the more exciting your Earth observation data science project becomes! A big thank you to Martin Schobben and the entire remote sensing team for creating this fantastic resource! We’ll continue to develop it, focusing on notebooks that we use for teaching at Technische Universität Wien, as well as training users of ASCAT and Sentinel-1 data provided by EUMETSAT, European Space Agency - ESA, Copernicus, and EODC . Also a big thank you to the Pangeo and Project Pythia community! It is amazing what you have built! #Cookbook #Notebook #Jupyter #Pangeo #EarthObservation #DataScience #Sentinel1 #ASCAT

The World Meteorological Organization's State of the Global Climate 2024 report presents alarming findings: 🌡️ 2024 was the warmest year in the 175-year observational record 🌊 Sea-level rise and ocean warming are accelerating and will be irreversible for centuries 📈 Carbon dioxide reached highest levels in 800,000 years 🚨 Early warnings and #climate services are vital to protecting communities and economies The report highlights the urgent need for early warning systems and climate services to protect communities and economies. It also acknowledges that sea-ice data were sourced from EUMETSAT's Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF), emphasising the role of satellite observations in climate monitoring. Read the full report below ⬇️
🔴The #StateOfClimate report, released today, reveals key climate change indicators again reached record levels in 2024. ⛰️Evidence of human-induced climate change is unmistakable, with some impacts now irreversible for centuries or even millennia. 🌐 In response, WMO and the global community are intensifying efforts to strengthen early warning systems and climate services to help decision-makers and society at large be more resilient to extreme weather and climate. While progress is underway, there’s an urgent need to act faster and push further. Check out the full report: https://lnkd.in/eHzj3XHF
