*** New ERC Starting Grant *** Congratulations to Jad C. Halimeh, an independent Max Planck Research Group leader in the Theory division at MPQ, on winning a prestigious ERC Starting Grant! 🎊 The grant, awarded by the European Research Council (ERC), is the highest award for excellent young scientists in Europe. With the funding of 1.5 million euros, the theorist and his team intend to advance current concepts of quantum simulation, particularly for higher-dimensional gauge theories and their far-from-equilibrium quantum many-body dynamics. In addition, the project will include extensive collaboration with experimental groups to implement these proposals on existing quantum hardware. #ERCStG ➡ https://lnkd.in/dVu3e3Rf

*** Congratulations to this new career step *** Timon Hilker, group leader in the Quantum Many-Body Systems department at MPQ, has accepted a permanent position at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. As a Reader, he will now continue his successful research on quantum simulations of complex materials in Glasgow. Reader is the third of four academic ranks in the British system and comparable to a W2 professorship. It involves teaching physics and working as an independent researcher. At MPQ, Timon Hilker has been heading the Lithium Quantum Gas Microscope laboratory at MPQ since 2010, and together with Philipp Preiss, the FermiQP project. We wish him all the best for his life and research in Glasgow! ➡️https://lnkd.in/dXDxUKDH

*** New Publication *** By combining infrared spectroscopy of blood plasma with machine learning, a team at MPQ, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and Helmholtz Munich led by Dr. Mihaela Žigman has developed a novel approach to early detect metabolic disorders and other common diseases with high accuracy requiring only a single measurement of a small blood sample. The ability to early detect biochemical changes in an individual's molecular fingerprint could save millions of people from the consequences of diabetes or high blood pressure. ➡️https://lnkd.in/dPsyKD8F

*** New Portrait *** Mari Carmen Bañuls, esteemed researcher and group leader in the MPQ Theory department, is a physicist and a computer scientist. Her career started in Valencia, Spain, with a fascination for particle physics, leading her to computer science and finally to the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. Here, she works on the development of algorithms for simulating complex quantum systems using tensor networks. Driven by curiosity and openness, Mari Carmen Bañuls emphasizes the importance of teamwork and exchange within the scientific community. To encourage this, she is involved both as a mentor for doctoral students and for the institute as a whole. Read more about her in the following portrait article 🤗 https://lnkd.in/ds4gm7Bb

*** New Publication in Science *** Entanglement today is THE tool of quantum information science. But it is highly sensitive and it is an enormous challenge to entangle resting qubits (atoms) with flying qubits (photons) "at the push of a button" - necessary to propagate entanglement in a quantum network. A team in the Quantum Dynamics Division at MPQ has now succeeded in doing exactly that with atoms connected in parallel. Using optical tweezers in a cavity, the team was able to individually control up to six atoms and entangle each with a photon. By applying a multiplexing technique, the scientists could thereby demonstrate an atom-photon entanglement generation with almost 100 percent efficiency, a groundbreaking experimental achievement and an a major step towards a future quantum internet. The work is published today in the journal Science. ➡ https://lnkd.in/d6yuJctN

*** Congratulations *** to Vitaly Wirthl, former PhD now Postdoc at MPQ, for receiving this year's Theodor Hänsch Dissertation Prize from the Faculty of Physics at LMU Munich – Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. In his work, Vitaly Wirthl succeeded in measuring a specific energy transition in deuterium, the heavy hydrogen, more precisely than ever before. Ultra-precise measurements such as these enable a direct comparison and test of the theory of quantum electrodynamics, and provide important clues, for example in the search for new physics or the exact determination of natural constants. The final evaluation of Vitaly Wirthl's new data is currently being eagerly awaited by precision physicists. https://lnkd.in/daQKj-d3
