At #COP16, our Women’s Land Rights Initiative is taking center stage! If you're in Cali, Colombia, we invite you to join us! 🗓 When: 29 October ⏰ Time: 10.00 - 11.00 am 📍 Place: Women’s pavilion, Quebec Plaza 🇨🇴 Cali, Colombia! Land-based solutions are central to the #UN's three Rio Conventions on #biodiversity, #climate, and #desertification. Yet, women – key land stewards – are often overlooked in these frameworks. Our Women’s Land Rights initiative – co-hosted by the Secretariats of the Conventions and the Robert Bosch Stiftung – is changing that. 🌳 We’ve united grassroots organisations, civil society, national focal points, and Women and Gender Caucuses in shared purpose: spotlighting women’s land rights as the backbone of sustainable solutions across the #RioConventions. 🤝 We’re committed to breaking down silos. Together, we’re aligning national plans and indicators, strengthening coordination of national (gender) focal points, and mobilising resources to engage women's grassroots organisations. 🌍 We want to align policy and practice to support the grassroots women driving this essential work—because women’s land rights are powerful levers for global progress. 🔥 At #COP16, the torch is ablaze for a strong realisation of #genderequality in #biodiversity action, grounded in secure land rights for Indigenous Peoples and women. 🗓 On 27 October, as part of the IUCN’s RISE grant challenge, our Researcher, Ilse Pelkmans, explains how our reporting and monitoring tool – Haki Ardhi – exposes land rights violations and gender-based violence resulting from carbon credit projects, and how data can be used to foster accountability and drive change. Join this event live online! https://bit.ly/3AlOeuX 🌳 Women are widely recognised as stewards of biodiversity, yet their rights to land and resources face constant threats from competing interests. Land rights are essential for women to adapt to climate change. Land rights also protect women from expulsion and provide the stability needed to invest in sustainable land management. 📃 🌎 At this event and others to follow at COP16, TMG Research and our partners are building on UN CBD’s Gender Plan of Action and Target 23 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to pioneer a world where women’s land rights are a core feature of gender equality in international climate agreements and climate action. 🔸 With this strong foundation, we'll work to ensure women can participate equally in decision-making over the vital resources that sustain their livelihoods, safety, and heritage. Follow us for more insights on #LandRights and the #RioConventions in the coming weeks as the year of Triple COP kicks off! As the new European Commission takes shape, 10 Directors of the European network of sustainability think tanks coordinated by IEEP, Think Sustainable Europe, urge to maintain social and environmental concerns as priorities in future EU legislation. In her political guidelines presented to the European Parliament in mid-July, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Commission would “significantly increase its funding for a just transition across the next long-term budget”. However, she also made it clear that competitiveness would be a key priority of the Clean Industrial Deal, which will replace the European Green Deal in the future. In this context, Think Sustainable Europe signatories call for clarity in three areas: 1️⃣ Long-term competitiveness and the definition of new European industrial policies - It remains unclear what such policies should be and how they could be financed. Alternative industrial policies should include support for innovation, demand-side policies, and a mix of regulation and subsidies. 2️⃣ International partnerships for shared prosperity and security - It would be pivotal to build partnerships with other regions, rather than focusing on decoupling as well as maintaining proper due diligence on social rights, environmental impacts, and governance. 3️⃣ Social model and rights-based approaches as a source of competitiveness - Social resilience is key to European security. While it has been severely weakened, the EU’s social model remains an important element of its economic differentiation. As sustainability think tanks, Think Sustainable Europe signatories call for a more holistic approach by promoting also the social and environmental aspects of the Clean Industrial Deal. To reach this goal, we need further dialogue between the Member States and between different sectors, if we intend to find feasible solutions to these key issues. Read the full opinion piece signed by Eero Yrjö-Koskinen (Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP)), Sébastien Treyer (IDDRI), Nathalie Bernasconi-Osterwalder (International Institute for Sustainable Development), Ioli Christopoulou (The Green Tank), Vit Dostal (AMO - Association for International Affairs), Christoph Heinrich (Ecologic Institute), András Kéri (Energiaklub Climate Policy and Applied Science), Alexander Müller (TMG Research gGmbH - TMG Think Tank for Sustainability), Mari Sanz (BC3 - Basque Centre for Climate Change), and Måns Nilsson (SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute). 📑 FULL TEXT: https://lnkd.in/ezEw9rXw Thanks to Sustainable Views and Philippa Nuttall for first publishing an edited and shorter version on their website, accessible here ⤵ https://lnkd.in/enYYHUDK #CleanIndustrialDeal #EuropeanGreenDeal #JustTransition #ThinkSustainableEurope

What is True Cost Accounting (TCA) ? 🌍 Understanding the true impact of our food choices is essential for creating a sustainable future. True Cost Accounting (TCA) provides a comprehensive approach to analyze these impacts from environmental, socio-economic, and health perspectives. 📊 TCA holistically assesses externalities across different supply chain scenarios, identifying strategies to reduce hidden costs that conventional methods often overlook. Unlike traditional approaches, TCA considers the full picture, such as the consequences of extensive fertiliser use on human health and the environment. 🍽️ For the first time, TCA will be applied to diets, uncovering significant but unaccounted impacts on natural, social, and human capitals. This shift is crucial for moving towards sustainable, healthy, and cost-effective diets. 🌱 By enabling policymakers to compare and understand various health, social, and sustainability issues, TCA highlights priority areas for intervention and identifies pathways for transformational change in government, business, farming, and consumer contexts. Watch the video to learn more about how TCA can shape the future of our food systems! 🎥 TMG Research gGmbH - TMG Think Tank for Sustainability 👉🏼 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eugqVAGM #TrueCostAccounting #SustainableDiets #FoodSystems #EnvironmentalImpact #SocioEconomicImpact #HealthImpact #PolicyMaking #SustainableFuture #PlanEat

Whoever got a bit bored over the last years with me always speaking about the community kitchens in Cape Town and my passion for them, thank you for hanging in there. There's a new topic I’m equally passionate about. After an incredible week in Nairobi, thanks to my colleagues WILLIAM ONURA and our partners VIOLET SHIVUTSE from Shibuye and Ann Wanjiru from MLAHRA, we have kicked off a qualitative research phase that will integrate feminist perspectives into the Nairobi work of Urban Food Futures. In Mathare, one of Nairobi's largest informal settlements where over 500,000 people reside, we are collaborating with women who run eateries through photovoice documentation and other creative forms of documentation. Together, we will co-create a narrative highlighting the often invisible role women play in sustaining food systems amidst polycrises. This week alone, we've seen fire outbreaks and the lingering impacts of recent floods, while the county continues to evict people from their homes. The eateries here are not just places to get food. In this first week of co-research, we’ve noticed parallels with our work in Cape Town: -> Women run the show. They often operate from their own homes, opening their private spaces to feed the community. -> Beyond nourishment. Eateries provide jobs and opportunities, from bringing water and charcoal to supporting cooking and cleaning. Preparing hundreds of meals a day requires significant planning and logistics. -> It’s more than food. These eateries serve as hubs for protection, safety, and caregiving. Many women are part of health caregiver networks, providing support and sometimes shelter and GBV (Gender-Based Violence) assistance. -> The massive role these eateries play in the informal urban food system is invisible and often overlooked. Initial conversations with the county show a lack of understanding of the vital role they play in their communities. In the coming months, our research will delve deeper into these initial findings. We aim to create a compelling report and engage in a learning journey with the county to understand what systemic support is needed. From a feminist perspective, I am thrilled that this research is women-led and that qualitative methods will uncover the root causes of violence and systemic oppression.
