It was a pleasure to welcome a delegation from Spain and Portugal to Jülich, who were on tour in NRW together with our colleagues from the Federal Foreign Office and NRW.Energy4Climate. Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. has a long-standing & trusting cooperation with both countries🤝That’s why a visit to our DLR Institut für Solarforschung and DLR Institut für Future Fuels in Jülich was a must☀️ 🇪🇸We have been working closely with our Spanish colleagues at Plataforma Solar de Almería - CIEMAT for many years and DLR has it owns site in Almería. The location of the Plataforma Solar is highly valuable as it is the largest center in Europe dedicated to researching, developing and testing concentrating solar technologies. 🇵🇹Together with our Portuguese partners of the University of Évora, DLR jointly manages a research infrastructure to test molten salt technologies close to the city of Évora. The EMSP makes it possible to investigate and validate a wide range of innovations in a relevant environment💡We look forward to many more years of collaboration! ☀ 🚀Exciting progress in solar energy research! The German Aerospace Center (DLR) and MAN Energy Solutions have achieved a significant milestone with the solar tubular receiver for molten salt at the Multifocus Tower in Jülich. For the first time, a salt temperature exceeding 600°C has been reached, surpassing the current industry standard of 565°C. This breakthrough not only enhances the efficiency of solar thermal power plants but also opens new possibilities for cost reduction in the sector. The ongoing tests at the Jülich facility validate the technology under realistic conditions, laying the groundwork for its commercial application. By increasing the operating temperature of the salt circuit, steam can be heated to higher levels, improving the efficiency of power generation. This development marks an important step forward in the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. 💥 👉For further information please visit our website: https://lnkd.in/ekKK5i6h #SolarEnergy #SolarResearch #CSP #ConcentratingSolar #EnergyResearch

☀️🚀 We are delighted to announce an innovative advancement in the efficiency of concentrating solar power plants! Machine learning methods can be used to calculate the power distribution at the receiver of solar power plants much more precisely, so that the efficiency of solar power plants can be increased immensely. The recent work titled "Automatic heliostat learning for in-situ measurement of concentrating solar power plants using differentiable ray tracing" has been published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications. It was created by a collaboration of the German Aerospace Center (DLR)-Institute of Solar Research, the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) and the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT). The new method combines machine learning techniques with differentiable ray tracing to achieve unparalleled precision in measuring heliostat surface deformations and calculating irradiance distributions using existing images from solar power plants. By identifying even the smallest unevenness of the concentrator, this approach allows for real-time, automated calibration of heliostats, paving the way for enhanced performance. This research marks a significant leap forward in solar technology, promising safer, more efficient, and cost-effective solar power generation. ⚡️ Congratulations to Max Pargmann, Jan Ebert, Markus Götz, Daniel Maldonado Quinto, Robert Pitz-Paal and Stefan Kesselheim. This productive and successful collaboration was made possible by Helmholtz AI. 🎉💥 Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/dRBbHbBP #SolarEnergy #SolarResearch #MachineLearning #CSP #NatureCommunications
