    Probably the most oft cited difference between B2B and B2C is the length of the sales cycle. And it’s true, in many B2B categories, the sales cycle is insanely long. Here’s some great data from Dreamdata, showing the average length is 192 days from first contact to close. There really is no “short game” in B2B, because even the short game is a long game. But it’s also true that in both B2B and B2C, the most important day is Day 1, the day the buyer enters the market. In both B2B and B2C, there is a “zero moment of truth,” when the buyer first considers a set of brands for their particular situation. In most B2B and B2C categories, only 2-3 brands get recalled in that moment, and those are the only brands even have a chance of getting bought. Something like 90% of buyers choose one of the brands from that Day 1 List. The other 191 days are less important than we think. It’s often perfunctory --buyers socializing a decision that has already been made in order to spread around any potential blame. Great product and event marketing can increase your odds of winning on Day 192, but the brunt of the work happens in the months and years before Day 1, when brand memories get made. Most B2B brands lose on Day 1, not Day 192.
