Un magasin alimentaire jette autant que ce qu’il gagne ! Alors que de plus en plus de consommateurs sont dans le besoin, lutter contre ce gaspillage doit être une priorité : les magasins peuvent aujourd’hui y remédier, tout en augmentant leur rentabilité. Entreprise engagée depuis 2012, à l’origine des rayons « Zéro Gâchis », Smartway a créé le premier Food Waste Management System pour optimiser le parcours des produits alimentaires en fin de vie.     Today, we highlight Mercadona's commitment to social responsibility and sustainability through their food donation initiatives. In the first half of 2024, Mercadona donated over 12,600 tonnes of essential products, equivalent to 210,000 shopping carts, to support vulnerable communities in Spain and Portugal. They are now collaborating with 785 social entities, significantly enhancing support for those in need. 🍽️ Mercadona actively participates in initiatives like the Great Food Collection and Spring Collection, offering innovative cash donation options at checkout to better serve beneficiaries' needs. As Laura C., Mercadona's Director of Social Action, states, "It allows food banks to purchase the products they require in the appropriate quantities and when they need them." ♻️ Environmental sustainability is also a strategic pillar of Mercadona's Social Responsibility Plan. Their Environmental Management System focuses on sustainable production, circular economy, and decarbonization.     🌟 This week, we highlight Walmart Canada's innovative efforts to reduce food waste across the supply chain. Since 2005, Walmart Canada has led waste-reduction initiatives. From 2015 to 2017, Walmart Canada cut food waste by 23%! Key actions include: 📉 Discounting repackaged or near-expiry products with the $1/$2 Bag Program. 🍞 Reducing over-production in bakery operations. 👩🏫 Providing training and resources to support employees. ♻️ Implementing organic recycling programs to convert unsaleable food into animal feed, compost, and energy. 🤝 Partnering with local food banks to maximize surplus donations. 📦 Improving packaging and food handling with suppliers. Walmart aims for zero food waste in its Canadian operations by 2025. "Food waste is a critical issue, and we have a unique role to play," says Rob Nicol, VP, Corporate Affairs, Walmart Canada. 📊 Globally, 31% of food is wasted, amounting to 1.6 billion tons annually in the U.S. alone. By 2030, this is projected to reach 2.1 billion tons, worth $1.5 trillion. In Canada, $31 billion worth of food is wasted yearly, contributing to 8% of greenhouse gas emissions.     🌟 This week, we spotlight Tesco for their trailblazing efforts in the fight against food waste. In 2013, Tesco became the first major UK retailer to publish its total food waste figures, aligning with the pledge to halve food waste by 2030. This transparency helps consumers understand where waste occurs and highlights the need for collective action. 🚜 By tracking 25 bestselling products from farm to fork, Tesco revealed that a staggering 35% of waste happens at home. In the first half of 2013 alone, 28,500 tonnes of food were wasted in stores and distribution centres. To combat this, Tesco collaborates with global experts and suppliers, including WRAP, to create comprehensive food waste footprints. Matt Simister, Tesco Group Food commercial director (in 2013, now CEO for Central Europe) emphasized, “We’ve all got a responsibility to tackle food waste and there is no quick-fix single solution. Little changes can make a big difference, like storing fruit and veg in the right way. Families are wasting an estimated £700 a year and we want to help them keep that money in their pockets, rather than throwing it in the bin." 🍅 Tesco is not just talking the talk but walking the walk by ending multi-buy promotions on large packs of bagged salads and continuously reviewing their processes to identify further waste reduction opportunities.     Qu’attendent les français des enseignes pour lutter contre le gaspillage ? Pour La Retail Tech, OpinionWay réalise pour la 3eme année consécutive une étude sur "𝑳𝒆𝒔 𝑭𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒄̧𝒂𝒊𝒔 𝒆𝒕 𝒍𝒆𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒅’𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒕𝒔 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆𝒔".     And here they are: the first 3 labeled products through Smartway application in Thailand! At Smartway, we are really (really really) pleased and excited to announce that the first Thai stores have been trained last week on the Smartway solution. A crucial first step to launch a whole roll-out for the Central Retail stores in the next few months.
