On September 12th, as part of their SME Month activities, Mckingtorch Africa partnered with Telecel Ghana to host a selected group of 15 SMEs at our facility! We ran a session for them on how to adopt sustainable practices in their organizations and the benefits this will bring to them including accessing funding for programs and projects as they collect and report E.SG. data. The participants had an amazing time making earrings from recycled glass, artwork from refrigerator foam waste, artwork from recycled plastic sheets and bottle tops as well as lotion/seedling containers from bottle tops. #SMEMonth #Sustainability #TelecelBusiness #WomenInBusiness

On September 7th we had the pleasure of hosting a tourism trip to the Volta Region with a great group of people! This trip was a great chance for us to get out and enjoy the very nature we at Mckingtorch are fighting to protect as well as rejuvenate and reaffirm our commitment to doing so. We made 3 stops on the trip to @Shai Hills Resource Reserve, Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary where we met some Mona monkeys aka the world’s friendliest monkeys as well as visited Wli Waterfalls, the highest waterfall in West Africa which we got to swim in. In 2018, our founder and CEO Awuku Makafui was ranked 3rd Most Influential Young Ghanaian in the Social Enterprise Space and the 27th  Most Influential Young Ghanaian! This is in a country of over 30.2 million people!

On February 5th 2019, Katja Lasseur, Deputy Head of Mission for the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana and her team visited the Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC) at Ashesi University. Her visit to the Ghana CIC was part of a series of visits she did to the various incubator hubs in Ghana receiving funding from the Dutch Government. Mckingtorch Africa received a one-year capacity-building support as part of businesses selected for the 4th Cohort of the incubation program was there to showcase works made from plastic waste as we push for sustainable solutions with waste.

In March 2019, Mckingtorch Africa's Plastic Waste Artwork ended up at the University of Oxford in the U.K.! Changing the narrative for Africa. Plastic waste left in the environment travels the world destroying habitats and leaving us with no safe spaces for the youth to innovate and create solutions. At Mckingtorch Creatives we decided to change the narrative and go on that journey with plastic waste but change the course of the journey. We are keeping plastic waste out of the gutters, streets and water bodies and turning them into fine arts that we will all not be ashamed of carrying around. It is an honour for us that one of our artworks from plastic waste ended up in Magdalene College at Oxford University in the U.K.

In June 2019, over 8 days and 72 hours of installation, Mckingtorch African along with 60 volunteers built a Commissioned Plastic Waste Segregation House made from 3160 plastic waste bottles. The structure had 5 windows, a door, and a roof and it can hold up to 600kg of plastic bottles. This house was made for Ghana International School (GIS). With this, the students and the school can segregate waste bottles over a long period and sell them to recycling companies or use them for environmental sustainability projects.
