About us
A subsidiary within ESB Group, we are ESB Networks. We are the licensed operators of the electricity distribution system in the Republic of Ireland, this includes all distribution stations, overhead electricity lines, poles and underground cables. We are responsible for building, operating and maintaining these to serve all 2.3 million electricity customers across the country safely and efficiently. We facilitate the competitive electricity market. As meter operator, we install, maintain and read the meters of all electricity customers and provide this information to suppliers. We have invested over six billion euro in the electricity network over the last 10 years to ensure that it is reliable and enables communities and businesses in Ireland to grow and develop. ESB Networks recently participated at the EirGrid Group Energy Citizens’ Roadshow in Halla Na Féile, Cashel, Co. Tipperary along with partners Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and Eirgrid’s Sinead Dooley, Head of Public Engagement. Sean Kelly, ESB Networks, Area Manager joined a panel along with Clare Lee, Climate Action Coordinator with Tipperary County Council, Matthew Staunton, Onshore and Offshore Project Manager at EirGrid and Gearóid Fitzgibbon, of SEAI Sustainable Energy Communities to discuss the benefits of the energy transition for the people of Tipperary. Sean was joined by Gerry Noone, Flexibility Business Development Manager from our DMSO Design team and Stephen Lane, Field Operations Lead, from our Smart Metering Deployment team who engaged with the public about how ESB Networks is working to deliver the electricity network for Ireland’s clean electric future.

ESB Networks recently participated at a Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) hosted round table discussion organised by eolas Magazine. Bevin Cody, Strategy, Innovation & Electrification Manager along with stakeholders from across the energy and transport sectors, including industry representatives Donal Minnock, Aoife OGrady, John Martin, Des Phelan and Darren Kinsella, met to discuss how Ireland can deliver against the alternative fuels targets mandated by the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR). Engaging with stakeholders on matters relating to key infrastructure challenges and discussing how to address them, is of importance to ESB Networks. We look forward to continuing our engagement plans with the wider energy and transport sectors as we deliver the electricity network for Ireland’s clean electric future.

ESB Networks welcomed stakeholders from the construction industry to its Contracting Partners Group Conference on Monday 24th February in County Laois. Nicholas Tarrant, Managing Director at ESB Networks, opened the event and spoke on the importance of ESB Networks’ role in delivering the electricity network for Ireland’s clean electric future. Matt Collins, Assistant Secretary leading the Energy function with responsibility for Renewable Electricity, Infrastructure & Hydrogen in the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications spoke about PR6 in the context of the new Programme for Government and the important role the energy sector has for economic development. Senior Leadership from across ESB Networks and ESB Engineering & Major Projects spoke at the event including Brian Brady, Declan Whyte, Martina Kenny, John Bracken, John Kelly & Simon Barry. Engaging with our stakeholders on matters of national infrastructure is of significance for ESB Networks as we plan together with our partners for a net zero future.

ESB Networks will participate at the next EirGrid Group Energy Citizens’ Roadshow in Halla Na Féile, Cashel, Co. Tipperary on Wednesday March 5th along with partners Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). Sean Kelly, ESB Networks, Area Manager, Newcastle West/Tipperary will speak at the event. The meet-up which commences at 6.15 p.m. will host several exhibitors working in the retrofit and sustainability space, followed by a panel discussion on the benefits of the energy transition to the people of Tipperary. Electricity supply has been fully restored to all customers following the severe damage caused by Storm Éowyn to Ireland’s electricity infrastructure. This storm impacted homes, farms, schools, and businesses nationwide causing a lot of hardship, stress and frustration. Thank you for bearing with us during one of the worst storms that Ireland has ever experienced. ESB Networks teams, along with our contract partners and utilities from across Europe, have worked tirelessly to restore power to every customer. With over 3,000 crew members deployed and supported by 1,300 staff coordinating design, damage assessment, and customer support, we have demonstrated the power of teamwork and resilience. Our contact centre team doubled to manage over 270,000 calls from our customers. We thank our customers for their patience and understanding during this difficult time. We wish all our European colleagues a safe journey home, and thank them for their huge support, great teamwork and valuable knowledge shared. ESB Networks has welcomed more than 285 skilled contractors from Austria, Finland, France and Great Britain who arrived to assist with power restoration in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn. We also look forward to welcoming additional support from Germany, Netherlands and Norway over the coming days. We extend our gratitude to these skilled personnel who join over 2,500 local ESB Network crews and partner contractors restoring power in the worst impacted areas. As of 31st January, ESB Networks has restored supply to 705,000 homes, farms and businesses and approx. 63,000 customers remain without supply, down from a peak of 768,000 following the unprecedented impact of Storm Éowyn. If you see a fallen wire or a low hanging wire, do not approach it, report it on 1800 372 999.
