The chronic #malnutrition rate for children in the Zinder region of #Niger is 53%. A staggering 90% of children do not consume an adequate diet that fulfils their basic nutritional needs. GOAL is implementing the S4Nut approach in Niger to increase access to, availability and consumption of nutritious food, using generous funding from Irish Aid. This is achieved via the socio-economic empowerment and improved financial inclusion of women. “Before, we had no occupation and could not meet our basic needs,” Laouré, a widowed mother of eleven says. “Now we have jobs, and it is uplifting to witness this change" ➡️ https://hubs.la/Q02TSRz80 #IrishAid

Rounds of airstrikes on southern suburbs in densely populated neighborhoods in #Beirut and on Southern #Lebanon have intensified over the last week, bringing even more destruction and the onslaught of a profound humanitarian emergency, as people continue to flee for their lives. This war has thrown a country already suffering from compounding crises – especially health related – into an even deeper void. Dorothy is a young woman living in Hopley, a suburb of Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare. She enrolled in a Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) course but was forced to drop out when she could no longer afford the tuition fees. "I lost hope and felt I would not be able to achieve anything meaningful in life" ➡️ https://hubs.la/Q02TDsGG0 Thanks to generous funding from USAID, GOAL is implementing the UPLIFT TVET programme in Zimbabwe to improve access to tertiary education for vulnerable young adults like Dorothy. “I acquired baking skills, entrepreneurship skills, and confidence to start my small business in April this year. Even if I face challenges in the future, I now believe I am resilient."

Happy #WorldFoodDay Today, we launch our new Food and Nutrition Security Discussion Paper, in partnership with Joshua Shumirai Marikopo, who is representing GOAL's NextGen Youth Network at the World Food Forum in Rome this week. Aligned with this year’s conference theme – RIGHT TO FOODS FOR A BETTER LIFE AND A BETTER FUTURE, our Discussion Paper focuses on the current global state of #food and #nutrition security. As food insecurity remains high, with famine looming in parts of the globe, conflict, climate change, disease, migration, and unsustainable global food systems are exacerbating this grave situation. ➡️ Learn more about how GOAL is working to ensure the world's most vulnerable people have food and nutrition security. https://hubs.la/Q02Tz_Cm0 #WFF2024 #GoodFoodForAll #WorldFoodForum2024 #GoodFoodForAll

After 18 months of intense conflict, #Sudan is now facing widespread disease outbreaks. Seasonal rains have triggered severe flooding and mass displacement, further hindering healthcare and humanitarian aid access. The flooding has also contaminated groundwater sources that were previously safe to drink, creating ideal breeding grounds for malaria-spreading mosquitoes. The healthcare system in Sudan is in ruins. According to the World Health Organization, 80% of hospitals and clinics in the hardest-hit regions — such as South Kordofan and North Darfur, where GOAL is operational — are either barely functional or closed. UNICEF reports that 3.4 million children under five are at high risk of contracting epidemic diseases, including cholera, malaria, dengue fever, measles, and rubella. Despite these challenges, GOAL teams are working relentlessly on the ground in South Kordofan to deliver essential healthcare services to displaced and conflict-affected communities. This includes providing vaccines, medications, and life-saving nutrition support to children suffering from severe malnutrition. Thank you to our generous donors for their support, including Irish Aid, USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, European Commission - ECHO, UNICEF, and United Nations OCHA.

Eight aid workers, under condition of anonymity, describe their experiences of the brutality of constant bombardment, and dwindling access to food, clean water, medicine or healthcare in El Fasher, in southwestern #Sudan, after 18mts of conflict. The aid workers are from CARE International UK, Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp, Norwegian Refugee Council, Plan International, Relief International, Save the Children International, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL and from the GOAL operation in El Fasher. Parties to conflict must uphold international humanitarian law (IHL), which includes protection of civilians, and end to indiscriminate targeting of civilians, refraining from using starvation or sexual violence as a weapon of war, and preventing mass atrocities.
