This Plastic Free July, The Malting Company of Ireland (MCI) wants to let you know about our proud partnership with Dublin City University's innovative Grain 4Lab team. Under the leadership of Dr Jennifer Gaughran, Brian Freeland, PhD, Samantha Fahy, Dr Susan Kelleher and Dr Keith Rochfort, the project is developing a solution to tackle the use of fossil-fuel-based single-use plastic in Irish research laboratories. The solution involves using waste from Ireland's brewing and distilling industry and transforming it into polylactic acid (PLA) to manufacture compostable bioplastics and create consumables such as Petri dishes for lab use. This project could prevent large quantities of single-use plastics from Irish labs going to incineration and landfills while creating compostable alternatives for lab materials. MCI is honoured to participate in this project, which will help provide a pathway to a true circular bioeconomy for bio-plastic production in Ireland. #plasticfreejuly

  • MCI's Chris O'Flynn enjoyed yesterday's crop walk at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine's (DAFM) seed trial facility in Ballyderown, Co Cork. Seed trials help to improve the agronomic performance of future barley crops. The Malting Company of Ireland welcomes this opportunity to continue our participation in developing new and improved barley varieties. Congratulations to all at the Irish Seed Trade Association and the DAFM for a great event. We are proud to work with you to help create sustainable barley on Irish soils. #agri-food

Thank you to Ciara McArdle for the insightful tour for the Malting Company of Ireland team at the Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard site. It was wonderful to see the final stage of the journey, which began with our growers' harvested barley, continued with MCI's expert malting processes, and culminated in the creation of Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard's world-renowned whiskeys. #malt #Dairygold #Tirlán #irishdistillers #pernodricard
