Over the past few days, we've been busy delivering our Design Your Future City programme, exploring water sustainability, ethics, and climate action! 💧 Water Management – We were lucky to have Dr. Laura Ribero from the DCU Water Institute 'dive' into the theme of water. Students got hands-on, collecting and testing water samples from the Royal Canal and the River Liffey to assess water quality. 🌍 Ethics & Climate Justice – Our ethics debate sparked discussions on food waste, climate justice, and how responsibility is shared in shaping a sustainable future. These conversations set the stage for students to think critically about real-world challenges. 🔮 Speculative Futures – Imagining Dublin in 2050, students used data from the Smart Docklands community survey to explore key challenges and develop responsive solutions. Over the next day, they will refine these ideas further, considering how their skills could shape the city’s future. 🌿 Biodiversity in the Heart of the City 🌍 - Day 2 of 'Design Your Future City' We were excited to explore how Trinity College Dublin is making space for nature with a tour from Collie Ennis, Biodiversity Officer. From green roofs and living walls to the campus pond full of frogspawn, Trinity is putting real effort into supporting urban biodiversity. Cities can feel like concrete jungles, but this walk showed us how green spaces can thrive even in the middle of Dublin City, benefitting both wildlife and people by making the campus a healthier, more sustainable place to be.    After lunch, it was time to get coding! 💻✨ Students used recycled materials and Micro:bits to create their own prototype pets, blending creativity with technology. One group even designed a pine marten,inspired by what they learned earlier with Collie about this endangered species making a comeback in Ireland. I recently joined Deirdre Molumby on the launch episode of Dublin City Council's official podcast, "What's the Story, Dublin?", to chat all things Smart City! 🎧 This podcast series is a great initiative to promote the work of the City Council! For anyone in my network interested in the intersection of technology, data, and urban innovation, this episode dives deep into what we're doing here in Dublin to leverage new and emerging technologies for the benefit of our citizens and communities. We covered a lot of ground, including: •Our definition of a Smart City and its purpose in Dublin •How data from IoT sensors is helping us manage the city more effectively •The crucial role of our Smart City unit to act as a bridge between Dublin City Council and the vibrant tech sector, including global players, startups, and research centres •An overview of our Smart district-specific initiatives, such as the pioneering Smart Docklands, our focus on health and wellness in Smart D8, and the exciting digital twin experimentation happening at Smart DCU •The power of partnerships working with companies like Google, Bentley, Ookla and Strava to gain valuable insights •A look back at the incredible journey of the Portal connecting Dublin with the world and the lessons learned (that was fun!!) •Our proactive approach to emerging technologies like drones and generative AI, including developing strategies and governance frameworks •The potential of Digital Twin technology for citizen engagement and future planning •And importantly, our commitment to upskilling through the Academy of the Near Future to ensure we have the talent and awareness needed to succeed.... This focus on education and training is absolutely vital.
