Goa is one of India’s smaller states. However, it has a diverse set of ecosystems. While many people associate the state with pristine beaches, it is also rich in biodiversity. Goa is home to unique species of flora and fauna. It is a paradise for birdwatchers. As a Wipro earthian sustainability educator, Harshada Guans from Arannya Environment Research Organisation (AERO) has been raising awareness about Goa’s natural heritage among the younger generation. In this brief interview, she shares her insights on Goa’s rich biodiversity and her efforts to protect it. -- “In Short” is a series of brief conversations with practitioners from Wipro Foundation’s partners' network. It offers insights into their work and motivations. It also shares the challenges they tackle within the communities they serve. Wipro Foundation supports AERO under the Sustainability Educator Program. The program empowers grassroots environmental educators across India to facilitate sustainability education efforts in schools. Harshada has been a part of our Sustainability Educators' Network since 2022.

Wipro Foundation’s partnership with Gubbachi began under the Wipro Education Fellowship Program in 2015. The team of four founders were all alumni of Azim Premji University. They started their journey in educational work at Government Higher Primary School, Kodathi, in Bengaluru. The intervention involved working with children from migrant communities. They came from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Over the years, Gubbachi has grown into a 120-member team. It operates in three clusters in Bengaluru, Doddakanneli, Bellandur and Varthur, through four programs, across nine (9) government schools. Since 2015, Gubbachi has enabled a 464% increase (from 75 to 423 students) in enrolment at Govt. Higher Primary School, Kodathi. Additionally, over 70% of the students are now at grade-appropriate learning levels. This is a significant increase, compared to ~30% when the work started. The Wipro team spent time with Gubbachi’s founding team to understand the challenges of access to education, health and financial institutions that migrant families face in a city like Bengaluru. Mr Dupuis also visited the Azim Premji Foundation Health Centre at Kariyammana Agrahara where we are the outreach partner. In our recommended read from the archives of "Samuhik Pahal," we bring you an article by Jo Chopra-McGowan. In a piece titled ‘Latika Vihar: more like real life,’ she shares her experiences as a member of the team, which sustains Latika Vihar as an inclusive learning space open to all children by keeping play at the center. https://lnkd.in/geJ9eWZw This article was first published in an issue of ‘Samuhik Pahal,’ which focused on the theme of ‘Learning spaces in schools, outside the classroom.’ This issue carries articles that look at the totality of the experience of schooling, and not just learning in classrooms. The pieces discuss, from multiple perspectives and spaces of practice, how these spaces outside the classroom can be used to help students become sensitive, responsible and engaged human beings and learners. Our partner Digantar is offering a course titled ‘Perspectives on Learning’. The course is a part of the Bedrock series, which provides comprehensive understanding regarding the foundations of education.   ‘Perspectives on Learning’ will enable learners to make connections between what is being taught, educational practice on the ground, and to appreciate the relationship between the two. It will discuss different conceptions and debates regarding “the child” and “childhood” and their implications for understanding the developing child in school and non-school contexts. It will take a life-span and developmental perspective to emphasize the continuity of development and learning.   The course is designed to address educators’ capabilities. They will learn how their approach, behavior, ability to connect with children, and insights into the child’s developmental stages, could help them guide the child’s learning better.   The course will be organized in-person in Jaipur. The language of instruction will be English.   Last day to receive nominations: July 5, 2024   To nominate individuals from your organization for this course, please visit: https://lnkd.in/gEf3bqMb   The application process for organizations includes a nomination of the potential participants by the organization's leader/founder. We hope this will allow for a more deliberate and conscious decision-making, aligned with each organization's internal capacity building needs and trajectories.
