Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) is taking significant steps towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050, with one key initiative being the "introduction of clean energy". Based on the premise that the optimal fuel varies depending on the type of vessel and shipping route, MOL is not only further promoting the use of LNG, a low-carbon fuel, but is also exploring the introduction of next-generation carbon-free fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen. In addition to developing alternative fuel-powered vessels, MOL is also advancing efforts in securing a stable supply of these clean fuels, all with the goal of achieving net zero emissions. LNG is currently a viable, low-emission option that we have begun utilizing to immediately reduce our carbon footprint. At the same time, we view biofuel as a promising short- to mid-term solution, capable of fitting into the existing ship fuel infrastructure without requiring significant modifications to engines. Looking further ahead, we are also exploring the use of e-methanol and bio-methanol, which are derived from renewable and non-fossil materials. These fuels, produced through innovative processes like synthesizing CO₂ captured from emission sources and hydrogen from renewable energy, have the potential to drastically cut our greenhouse gas emissions. MOL is also focusing on e-methane and bio-methane, both of which offer significant reductions in total GHG emissions by combining CO₂ and hydrogen from renewable sources, or by using bio-methane derived from biomass. Ammonia is another key part of our strategy. This zero-emission fuel does not release CO₂ during combustion and holds promise not only as a clean fuel but also as a carrier for hydrogen, further solidifying its role in future shipping technologies. Hydrogen itself, which emits no CO₂ when burned, is gaining attention as a next-generation fuel in the maritime industry, and we are excited about its potential to revolutionize the shipping sector. Additionally, MOL is working on developing electric vessels, contributing to zero-emission operations, especially for coastal shipping, where environmental protection and crew welfare are urgent priorities. By embracing innovative technologies and clean energy, MOL is dedicated to playing a key role in the global movement towards sustainability. Together, we can steer the course towards a greener future. Read more about MOL and Clean Energy here: https://lnkd.in/guJmsdre https://lnkd.in/guAzTU3H

New Blog posted!! In the "BLUE ACTION MOL", which challenges the creation of sustainable global environmental technologies and infrastructure, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) declares: "If you look at the world from an ocean perspective, you can see a completely different future." One specific effort is advancing our participation in the operation of a demonstration plant and the development of related technologies for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC). OTEC has the potential to become a foundation for the economic independence of island nations, not only for power generation but also through the utilization of deep seawater used in power generation to create local industries and living infrastructures. This is a creation of a future world unique to MOL, expanding our field into social infrastructure enterprises originating from the sea. In this blog, we will introduce an overview of the project and our passion for the project, which includes an interview with the person in charge of OTEC project, in Part 1 and Part 2. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that it has decided to equip its LR1 product tanker Nexus Victoria (75,000 DWT class) with the "Filtree System", an onboard CO2 capture system with a SOx scrubber manufactured by Value Maritime B.V. (VM), a Dutch emission reducing technology company. This marks the first time a Japanese operator has commercially installed a CO2 capture system onboard a vessel. The system is slated for installation around the end of 2024. The Filtree System has a scrubber function that removes 99% of sulfur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM) contained in exhaust gases and a carbon capture and storage (CCS) function that separates and recovers up to 10% of CO2 from the exhaust emissions. CO2 in the exhaust gases generated onboard the vessel is adsorbed and captured by reacting with a special chemical substance. The chemical will be discharged ashore, and the heat-separated CO2 can be supplied to greenhouses, synthetic fuel companies and other end users before being put to good use. The MOL Group has positioned its environmental strategy as a key element of its "BLUE ACTION 2035" management plan, and set the target of achieving net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 in the "MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2". The Filtree System is a technology that separates and captures CO2 emitted from the vessel and is expected to be an effective means of carbon neutralization in the shipping industry. This system is noteworthy as an initiative to promote decarbonization of existing vessels, which are difficult to convert to next-generation fuels. MOL and VM will continue working toward the realization of a carbon-neutral society by reducing GHG emissions from vessels and building a CO2 capture value chain. From the blue oceans, the MOL Group will contribute to the sustainable development of society and the preservation of nature, sustain people's lives, and ensure a prosperous future, by expanding business upstream and downstream in the CCS/CCUS value chain, acquiring projects, and accelerating the development of the value chain.
