Naco Technologies had the pleasure of attending the Hy-fcell event in Stuttgart, where our Chief Commercial Officer, Raivis Nikitins, engaged with leaders and innovators in the hydrogen industry. It was an insightful experience, especially as we continue to push the boundaries at Naco Technologies in the green hydrogen sector. Here are some key learnings and takeaways:
📍MAHLE (represented by Arnd Franz) is shifting towards hydrogen combustion engines, which they expect to offer by 2025. Notably, H2 combustion engines are predicted to be 2-3x cheaper than fuel cells (FC), although FCs are considered more efficient, particularly for long-haul operations and scenarios where maximum loads are not used. 🔧
📍Toyota Motor Europe (represented by Stephan Herbst) highlighted significant investments in clean hydrogen projects, emphasizing the need for Europe to improve infrastructure to remain competitive. 🌍
📍Bosch (represented by Matthias Ziebell) shared their ambitions in PEM water electrolysis, aiming for €5 billion in hydrogen technology sales by 2030. 🤝
📍Hydrogen Combustion Engines – While FCs remain critical, hydrogen combustion engines are gaining momentum due to their cost-effectiveness and faster scalability. This could serve as an excellent intermediate solution to drive the necessary infrastructure development and hydrogen offtake. 🚛
📍Infrastructure Challenges – Both investment and regulatory alignment are crucial to making hydrogen a viable energy solution across industries. Pragmatic, incremental improvements were a recurring theme. 🏗️
📍Europe's Competitive Position – Europe needs to accelerate investments in infrastructure and regulatory frameworks to keep pace with regions like China, which is leading in hydrogen production.⚡
📍Collaborations for Cost Reduction – Partnerships across the value chain, particularly in PEM water electrolysis, will be key to driving down costs and improving system efficiency. 💡
📍Graphite vs. Metallic Bipolar Plates – Durability and cost trade-offs between these two materials continue to influence fuel cell technology development. Many FC manufacturers have already made their choices, with both sides promising at least 20,000 hours of efficient operation. Naco Technologies’s nano-coatings technology can offer significant improvements, particularly in extending the lifetime of metallic FC stacks. ⚙️
🎉 Congratulations to our partners and friends at CellForm Hydrogen (Simon Brugger, Moritz Miller, Tobias Heinz, and the rest of the team) on winning the hy-fcell – International Expo and Conference Start-up Award 2024!
🤝A special thank you to the Hy-fcell organizers for the insightful technical tour to MAHLE, smk - systeme metall kunststoff, GLOBE Fuel Cell Systems, and Goetze KG Armaturen. 🚶♂️🏭
It was an inspiring event, and we are excited to explore further collaborations to drive innovation in the hydrogen space.
