On Friday, the #SEI's Green Agenda team engaged in an insightful discussion with members of the European Business Association of Moldova and representatives from some of the country's largest companies. This strategic dialogue aims to pave the way for a collective commitment to 🇲🇩’s sustainable economic transition. Lauri Tammiste, the Director of SEI’s Tallinn Office and National Lead for 🇲🇩’s Green Agenda Project, emphasized, “The discussions underscored the business sector's pivotal role in the green transition. Studies from other countries have shown, that the majority of green transition investments typically come from the private sector – both households and businesses. This underscores the importance of collaboration across all sectors to advance a sustainable agenda.” Moving forward, Mr. Tammiste expressed interest in supporting the establishment of a collaborative network of key stakeholders to streamline discussions, promote capacity-building, and align governmental and business efforts, facilitating 🇲🇩’s journey towards a sustainable landscape. He also explained that the Green Agenda project aims to deliver a comprehensive assessment of the current state of green transition in 🇲🇩 across all the key sectors. The project intends to develop a roadmap to address identified bottlenecks and gaps during the assessment phase and proceed with practical implementation by supporting capacity-building projects and pilot programs in selected areas. Mariana Rufa, the Executive Director of the European Business Association added, “Capacity-building initiatives and engaging key stakeholders, such as the business sector, at each critical stage are vital. A unified approach to 🇲🇩 ’s Green Transition and Trade is essential for mobilizing action and reaping the benefits of low hanging fruits.” The Green Agenda project will also be complemented with a climate neutrality modelling tool. Mr. Tammiste explained that the tool will provide 🇲🇩 decision-makers with a detailed quantitative evidence base on the climate and economic impacts of various policy choices for mitigation measures and their cost-effectiveness. Expanding on this idea, Mariana Rufa highlighted, “Exploring the availability of climate modeling and support for the private sector, in addition to macro-level tools for the public sector, is essential, benefitting both #SMEs and large corporations.” Victor Guzun, Coordinator of the Delegation highlighted the importance of creating strong support frameworks and practical tools to assist businesses, especially SMEs, in navigating the increasing requirements of ESG standards. As Moldova advances on its green journey, stakeholder engagement remains critical to ensuring successful implementation. “Creating conducive financing conditions for businesses is imperative, not only to adapt but to excel in the new environmental policy landscape,” said Vladislav Tiltu, Maib representative.
