The Malaysian edition of Unlocking capital for sustainability is currently underway at Securities Commission Malaysia in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur! A key topic this morning was the urgent need for capacity building among SMEs to navigate increasing climate-related disclosures and sustainability reporting standards. As Eco-Business Founder and Managing Director Jessica Cheam mentioned in her opening remarks, while it is imperative for companies to “prioritise building capacity in their organisations and to upscale their workforce for a rapidly evolving landscape”, it is the SMEs - the backbone of Malaysia’s economy - that are the “heart of this effort.” As to what drives SMEs towards sustainability-related disclosures and to decarbonise, Navina Balasingam, General Manager at Capital Markets Malaysia (CMM), noted in the opening plenary that SMEs are compelled to disclose for two reasons: a) they’re being compelled to do so by their customers; 2) they see a competitive advantage in becoming more sustainable. She further added, “the one thing we see that can drive SMEs is when an anchor [company] is willing to support the progress and to be responsible of their supplier's sustainability journey, it really does move the needle.” Missing out on the event? Malaysia's Employees Provident Fund EPF Malaysia has published the EPF Sustainable Investment Stewardship Policy, becoming the first institutional investor in Malaysia to publish a standalone stewardship policy for sustainable investment. The policy outlines the processes and guidelines the EPF follows to promote good sustainability practices among its investee companies and external fund managers. This aligns with the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment, which define stewardship as institutional investors using their influence to maximise overall long-term value, encompassing economic, social, and environmental assets essential for returns and the interests of clients and beneficiaries. The policy covers approaches to key stewardship areas, such as monitoring, engagement and escalation options, in efforts to align companies with its sustainable investment policies and improve management of material ESG risks and opportunities. Malaysia has topped IPOs in Southeast Asia with US$450 million raised in public listings in the first quarter of the year according to Deloitte. In this period, Singapore raised US$20 million, Thailand US$427 million, Indonesia US$248 million, the Philippines US$194 million and Vietnam US$37 million. Malaysia held 33% of the market share in terms of IPO proceeds raised, the largest in the region. The report suggests that new listings were skewed towards smaller deal sizes, and Malaysia’s IPO performance continued to be underpinned by new listings on the ACE Market. Key IPOs highlighted: - Alfa IVF Group Bhd’s public offering raised US$94 million, placing it third on the Southeast Asian top 10. -Prolintas Group Infra Business Trust’s US$94 million, Main Market ranked in 4th place, cited as a landmark being the first Islamic business trust IPO to be listed in Malaysia -Feytech Holdings Bhd (US$43 million, Main Market) in 8th place, -Keyfield International Bhd in 10th place (US$37 million, Main Market).
