Today marks the close of an engaging 2-weeks training and capacity building for some National Hort Research Insitute NIHORT staff in plantain and banana breeding. Participants gained invaluable knowledge in Tissue culture, Macropropagation, Field management and Digital data capture. Participants recounted their numerous achievements in deep appreciation to the IITA plantain/banana breeding team. Significantly, the participants are leaving the training now experienced in the use of MusaBase - the globally accessible database designed for advanced breeding methods in banana breeding. The growing partnership between IITA and NIHORT promises impact that will improve food systems and the livelihoods of millions. This systematic review examines essential practices such as soil and water conservation, integrated soil fertility management, and agroforestry. It highlights adoption rates, socioeconomic benefits, and the barriers to implementation. The African Union Inter-African Phytosanitary Council (AU-IAPSC) and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) are long term partners. Today, we visited Lava (IITA) Kumar member of IAPSC steering committee in Ibadan, Nigeria to strengthen our partnership in finding durable solutions against invasive pests and build African NPPO capacity in Plant Health as highlighted in the Plant Health Strategy for Africa PHSA.

The Soil Values program took a collaborative step forward, hosting participatory soil fertility and soil health diagnostic activities with small-scale farmers and livestock breeders living in watershed and sub-watershed communities from Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and northern Nigeria. “Localities are experiencing problems with soil fertility and health, exacerbated by the effects of climate change. We recommend a concerted approach and hope that communities will be at the heart of activities to take full advantage of them,” shared Boureima Bengali, Second Deputy Mayor of Kaboïla in the Sikasso region of Mali. In the Global South, agriculture is vital for rural livelihoods, yet farmers often face significant challenges, including limited access to modern technologies and the impacts of climate change. Cocoa farmers in Ghana, who contribute significantly to global cocoa production, are particularly vulnerable to unpredictable weather patterns and prolonged droughts, threatening their livelihoods. However, exciting advancements in innovative financing for solar irrigation are emerging as a promising solution. In September 2024, Ithaka Institute and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) explained the CDRterra #PyMiCCS concept (a combination of #biochar and #rockpowder) and the trial on maize in Siaya county, Kenya. https://lnkd.in/d9sW6p4p Through the co-applications of biochar and volcanic rock powder and rock-enriched biochar from co-pyrolysis, we have set out to test the following: - The soil is healthier, and the farmer produces more nutritious food - The farmer produces more food, or the same amount of food with lower mineral fertiliser inputs - PyMiCCS removes and reduces #greenhousegasemissions Since a picture tells a proverbial thousand words, we have illustrated the hypothesis in the article below, to show how deploying the PyMiCCS concept can positively impact #soilfertility in the tropics and boost carbon dioxide removal (#cdr).
