Cycling and physical activity share a common goal: getting people moving. 🤝 Our colleague Alex Baum attended ISPAH - The International Society for Physical Activity and Health where he had the opportunity to connect with global leaders shaping the future of physical activity and well-being. Here are our top takeaways: 🔹 Cycling can benefit from the physical activity sector by strengthening the evidence base for more cycling and developing improved measurement tools to track its growth and impact. 🔹 Encouraging cycling is a behaviour shift, and we must provide people with the awareness, skills, access, and motivation to make it happen. 🔹 For cycling and physical activity to truly benefit individuals and communities, they must become part of the daily routine—cycling to school, work, shops, and friends—not an add-on. A big thank you to our Cycle for Better Health partner, Cities for Better Health, for introducing us to this incredible ecosystem! We're working together to bridge the gap between health and mobility, highlighting cycling's crucial role in promoting physical activity, well-being, and its numerous health benefits. We are an Amsterdam-based global NGO supporting community-led urban change through cycling.
Over ons
We are an Amsterdam-based global NGO guided by the belief that bicycles transform cities and cities transform the world. We envision an urban future in which half of city trips are by bicycle by the end of the decade. To help achieve this, we facilitate the development of bicycle cultures in cities across the world, striving towards this bold vision that we call 50x30.

Global Experts Explore Cairo's Cycling Potential at #WUF12 As part of the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt, BYCS in collaboration with UN-Habitat Egypt and with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt organized a very interesting “Urban Walking Tour” in downtown Cairo. Approximately 50 international mobility experts joined us to explore potential bike-sharing locations and discuss the challenges and opportunities of urban cycling in Cairo. A dynamic networking event at the Netherlands' Embassy followed the tour, providing an opportunity for participants to further explore the topics and exchange expertise. 💡Did you know? The Netherlands is renowned for its cycling culture, with more bicycles than people! 🚴♀️🚴♂️ #UrbanCycling #SustainableMobility #NLinEgypt Eva Witteman Donia Tawakol Nelly Darrag Lon Zomer Sally Barsoum Folkert de Jager

We had a fantastic session at World Urban Forum 12 Egypt on “Advancing Caring Cities,” moderated by our colleague Daniela Abril Gutierrez, and joined by Simon Battisti , Yousra El-Nemr and Rushda Majeed. With our panellists bringing insights from regions spanning the Netherlands, Egypt, Albania, and India, we explored how active mobility and child-centred urban planning can create cities of “care.” We discussed key topics such as the great benefits of school streets, the barriers to cycling in Egypt, and the road to empowerment of women cycling in rural areas. 🚴♀️ Our highlights included presenting the International Children’s Cycling Manifesto - a call to give children not just a voice at the table, but an active role in shaping the cities they live in. Thank you to all who joined us in this meaningful discussion. We look forward to working together towards building cities with and for our youngest ones! #MobilitiesOfCare #ChildFriendlyCities #Cycling #CaringCities Van Leer Foundation, Qendra Marrëdhënie, Tabdeel, BYCS

The event, moderated by Skadi Tirpak (Dutch Cycling Embassy), opened with inspiring remarks from Eva Witteman, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt, an introduction from José Besselink (Gemeente Rotterdam) and continued with valuable insights from Maud de Vries (BYCS), Winnie Sambu (World Bicycle Relief), Ana María Navia Peláez (World Resources Institute). Thank you Nieuw & Verbeterd (Gertjan Hulster Arne Gielen) and Fietsersbond Rotterdam+Regio (Willem-Frederik (WF) Metzelaar) for creating this short film and setting the stage for a discussion on building a (happy, healthy, and safe) cycle-friendly future for children. https://lnkd.in/eyWe4VZp

It’s been a busy day for the PATH coalition at the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt 🇪🇬 🌍 Many of our partners hosted side events. Here are a few highlights: During the PATH session titled "Walking and cycling - A Path to unlock the potential of active mobility to meet climate goals and make our cities more liveable," we discussed how effective walking 🚶♀️ and cycling 🚴♂️ policies can mitigate climate change and promote healthier communities 🌱. Institute for Transportation and Development Policy organised a training event on "Access-Accelerating Access to Low Carbon Urban Mobility Solutions through Digitalization," exploring how digital technologies 💻 can transform transportation systems 🚏. Meanwhile, the Dutch Cycling Embassy hosted a session in the Urban Cinema 🎬 on “Building a (happy, healthy, and safe) Cycle-Friendly Future for Children” posing the thought-provoking question: What if every child could cycle safely and joyfully in cities designed for them? 🏙️🚲 BYCS contributed a session on “Advancing caring cities Active mobility for healthy, safer, and inclusive child friendly futures.,” providing insights into the transformative power of child-friendly urban planning 🏡 and the benefits of cycling 🚲.
