In a single center study, conducted at the Surgical Division of Isala (ziekenhuis) Hospital, The Netherlands between 2019 and 2022, our wearable wireless biosensor solution, #Healthdot was implemented to understand the effects of continuous vital sign monitoring in 908 abdominal surgical patients. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of continuous vital sign monitoring in the length of stay of the patient in the general ward of the hospital which is a critical factor in the hospitals due to rapidly rising healthcare costs. The results of the study showed that with continuous vital monitoring, the length of stay in the hospital had reduced in comparison to the standard care (intermittent manual monitoring check by nurses). Additionally, the nurses of the general ward were able to perform other important nursing activities such as extra patient assessments and therapeutic interventions. This study highlights the benefits of continuous patient vital monitoring in length of stay at hospitals and enabling the nurses to deliver better patient care.
