B&A are proud to announce that we have become a Toitū carbonreduce certified organisation. In achieving this milestone, we have measured and are now managing the operational emissions of our organisation, including business travel, electricity, vehicles and offices, and have been independently verified in accordance with ISO 14064-1. This will allow us to better understand our own impacts and to actively take steps to mitigate and reduce these as we move forward in our Toitū journey. As a specialist planning and urban design consultancy, we also work alongside clients and stakeholders to help deliver reductions in carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases as part of their future development plans. We think understanding our own carbon emissions will ultimately assist us in advising our clients how we can help design and build better urban environments that help to mitigate and reduce the impacts of a changing climate.

B&A are proud to support the recently released He Pou a Rangi Climate Change Commission’s first monitoring report on the implementation of the National Adaptation Plan. Earlier this year B&A worked with the Commission to prepare a supporting report on local government climate change adaptation planning, specifically adaptation governance, funding and delivery arrangements, as well as key barriers and opportunities for improved climate adaptation. We are pleased to see that a number of recommendations arising from our work have been included in the 2024 progress report – an independent, evidence-based assessment of the effectiveness of the National Adaptation Plan, and how its implementation is progressing. The progress report can be used to help the Government make informed choices about how to meet Aotearoa New Zealand’s climate goals, support communities and businesses to prepare for the future, and provide transparency about climate action. It is great to be involved in such an important field of work!

#NEW: Our first report assessing progress on the Government's National Adaptation Plan has been released: https://lnkd.in/g87bCJjb This is the Commission’s first-ever monitoring report on the government’s national adaptation plan, which was released in 2022. Our report provides an independent, evidence-based assessment of how effective the plan is and how its implementation is progressing.    The impacts of climate change are affecting the lives and livelihoods of New Zealanders around the motu. As a country, we already have a pretty good idea of what needs to be done to avoid and minimise harm and damage from climate change.     But as a series of extreme weather events since early last year have illustrated – and this report’s findings show – Aotearoa New Zealand is not adapting to climate change at the scale or pace that is needed.      The report includes nine recommendations: seven focused on helping the country shift from the current reactive approach to a more proactive one, and two on improving national adaptation planning and monitoring.     Our findings and recommendations provide valuable insights. They can be used to help the Government make informed choices about how to meet Aotearoa New Zealand’s climate goals, support communities and businesses to prepare for the future, and provide transparency about climate action.  Our full report, along with supporting technical documents, is available on our website. #ClimateAdaptation #ClimateAction

🌟 B&A Team Community Day 2024 🌟 Our whole B&A team got together recently to spend a fulfilling day giving back to our community. We cooked nearly 1000 delicious meals that were donated to Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei as well as a local food bank. The meals will be distributed far and wide in the community to those who need them.   It was a day filled with teamwork, fun and laughter, and the experience was incredibly rewarding and a great reminder of the power of coming together for a greater cause.   A huge thank you to Sachie Nomura and the team at Sachie’s Kitchen for hosting us, and to everyone who continues to support our community efforts. We're already looking forward to next year!

Our B&A Wellington team had a great time at this event last week! Thank you to Urban Development Institute of New Zealand UDINZ, Greater Wellington Regional Council and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi for hosting – we look forward to more events and love seeing the great mahi being undertaken in the Wellington Region.

With thanks to those that joined us in Wellington last week for our "Creating Vibrant, Resilient Communities through better Urban Form" event delivered in partnership with, member, Greater Wellington Regional Council Te Pane Matua Taiao and kindly hosted by member NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi. We heard from: ➡️Alan Whiteley (WSP in New Zealand) who took us through on the newly released Urban Design Toolkit for the Wellington region commissioned by the Wellington Regional Council ; ➡️Stu Farrant (Morphum Environmental) who took us through the history of the water catchment that services the CBD in its various incarnations and how we might take a different more water-sensitive approach to urban design and development; and ➡️Andrew Schoultz (Sense Partners) who talked about analysis he has done on compact urban development close to existing transport links and infrastructure and how models for the cost of that are designed. All speakers emphasised that population across the Wellington region will be increasing exponentially and the best way to influence the future for us to is to design it to provide for that growth. In doing so it's critical we connect people to places both for the better functioning of those places, the wellbeing of our citizenry and the health of the natural and built environment. All the work we do should be based on place. Another important consideration is climate. Our climate is changing and we must take this into account – whether this is through design, how we use and work with water or living in more dense neighbourhoods. We should as urban development professionals view redevelopment as an opportunity, an opportunity to enhance outcomes. Through our work we should be asking “what opportunities does this work providing for improving outcomes”? It was acknowledged that there is an unhelpful tension between a housing crisis and better outcomes for the future. With perceived cost, rather than whole of life value, being used as a key roadblock to better outcomes. The question was posed - how can we grow the Wellington Region whilst also managing cost! It's all about better urban form and how as a society we might go about building more connected, vibrant and resilient communities, all in the most cost effective way! With thanks to Catherine Knight PhD of WRC for all her work in pulling this event together and thanks again to our venue hosts NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi who provided access to the space for the discussion to occur. #Whereindustryandinsightmeet #connectcollaboratecommunity #resilientsustainablehealthy
