We had an incredible few days at Northland Field Days this year connecting with our community, answering any questions, and sharing insights about all areas of our business including electricity, fibre, and renewables. Visitors to our stand explored our new power savings quiz, designed to help customers find simple, effective ways that they can reduce their power bills. We also highlighted our recent Stay Safe Together campaign available on our website: https://lnkd.in/gqE3XEph Our Renewables team showcased the latest in solar farm technology with a hands-on display, and representatives from The Northpower Electric Power Trust were on-site to meet directly with consumers. Thanks to everyone who stopped by - we loved the kōrero. #community #staysafetogether #events #fieldays #northlandfielddays #northpower #northpowernz

Celebrating the incredible wahine leading the way in Te Tai Tokerau this International Women’s Day! Today two of our own, Chané Ballantine and Paige Bradley, attended Northland Corporate Group’s ‘Leading Women into the Future’ event in beautiful Kerikeri. This year’s theme for the day, Accelerate Action, is about advancing and celebrating women’s equality worldwide. Chané and Paige were inspired by keynote speaker Jenni Prisk and an insightful panel featuring Dame Jenny Shipley, Ripeka Evans, Karlene Everitt, and Mere Mangu, who each shared valuable leadership lessons. A key takeaway from the day was our responsibility to lead and drive change in Te Tai Tokerau. Ripeka Evans challenged attendees to foster wahine leadership in STEM and shaping the future of industries like our own. Dame Jenny Shipley spoke on the power of knowing who you are, leading with authenticity, and using critical thinking in an AI-driven world. This event was an inspiring reminder of the impact that we can make together. At Northpower we’re committed to supporting wahine in leadership and STEM, driving progress in Te Tai Tokerau and beyond. Let’s keep empowering one another, accelerating action, and shaping a stronger future for Aotearoa. #internationalwomensday #accelerateaction #northpower #northpowernz

The Kensington substation is the biggest in Northpower’s electricity distribution network, supplying power to 28,500 homes and businesses in the Whangārei district. A substantial upgrade is underway as part of Northpower’s $251 million asset investment programme, ensuring continued reliable power supply to our growing population. Upgrades will also include constructing an additional switchroom building and upgrading end-of-life switchyard equipment, including high voltage circuit breakers and protection equipment. The project is expected to be completed in December 2026. Learn more at the link below. #reliability #electricitysupply #substations #communityinvestment #localpartners #northpower #northpowernz

As part of Northpower’s ongoing investment in network resilience, we installed two new submarine cables across the Wairoa River between Raupo, Ruawai, and Tikinui on the Pouto Penninsula in November last year. This critical upgrade secures a reliable power supply to one of the most remote parts of our network on the west coast of the Kaipara region. The $1.6 million project required careful planning, specialist marine expertise, and close collaboration with local stakeholders. When extreme weather put one of our large support towers at risk, we acted fast to protect Whangārei’s power supply. Working closely alongside Te Parawhau, our team invested $3.06 million to design and build a brand-new 110kV transmission line, ensuring long-term reliability for our region. The successful delivery of the project ahead of schedule is a testament to the way our engineers tackle problems that arise and highlights the benefits of quality collaborations with hapū, local councils, and external consultants. Our Whangārei customers now have the benefits of an electricity supply with improved resilience. This project was additionally recognised at the Electricity Engineers’ Association of New Zealand awards, winning the Engineering Excellence Award. Great work Nicole, Dave, and the rest of the team! This helps ensure our customers get the latest information when they need it most. Great innovation.
Our GE Poweron ADMS is great at providing information on customer outages. But how to effectively push that information out to the Website and phone systems ? Nicole Wrack and Dave Bartlett, BE (with help from Mick Buckley & Kathi Jeeves) developed our NORA platform, which takes near real-time ADMS Outages updates, and presents it to our Operations/Customer teams to publish. A great example of OT/IT integration! Well done team!

With the historically small seaside settlement of Mangawhai expanding steadily in recent years, Northpower has constructed a brand-new substation in the area to meet the growing electricity demand. Our 15-megawatt substation at Mangawhai Central will power an initial 7,500 homes and businesses with the capacity to expand as the community continues to develop. Along with the substation, new high-voltage lines are being installed in the area increasing the electricity supply’s reliability now and into the future. This was a $11.2 million investment for us and the project was completed with the help of many partners and contractors - we’re proud to contribute to local employment in the area. Our Executive General Manager - Digital, Ed Overy, captured some great photos while out on site earlier this week!
I spent the morning with Northpower Whangārei and Dargaville line crews for the installation of new switches, a recloser, pole and conductor on our 33kV feeder line to Ngunguru. It's encouraging to see the commitment of our crews to their jobs and building infrastructure to support Northland's future.
