Australians now have the "Right to disconnect" - and it seems the UK are close behind...
NEWS ALERT! Australia has now introduced the "right to disconnect' law, giving employees the right to disconnected from work communications after hours, in a bid to improve work-life balance and mental health. Under this legislation, Australians can now legally ignore calls and emails from their bosses after office hours without facing any repercussions. Despite being met by mixed reactions and criticised for being "rushed through", the decision follows a global trend, with countries like France, Germany, and Italy already implementing similar measures. 🇬🇧 In the UK, the conversation around the right to disconnect is gaining traction. The UK government is exploring options for introducing similar legislation as part of its commitment to modernising workers’ rights. Consultations are underway, drawing inspiration from models in Belgium and Ireland, where the right to switch off has been incorporated into national labor laws. Although no law has been passed yet, the Labour Party has promised to address this issue in future employment rights reforms, particularly in response to the growing prevalence of hybrid work. Why does everybody hate HR? A well-functioning HR department can bring incredible value to a business. Many entrepreneurs rightly claim, "People are my most important asset"... so having a strong People team to manage this asset is crucial. So, why the negativity towards HR? Well because - let’s be honest - we can be quite annoying. Processes, compliance, documentation - this isn’t what you want to be spending your time on when trying to move quickly and decisively. And it's not just you. A recent article from The New York Times highlights that HR teams remain unpopular in many companies, regardless of the industry... which in turn is making your HR teams themselves miserable. “People in HR tend to be very compassionate, very empathetic,” said Hebba Youssef, the Chief People Officer at Workweek. “But a lot of employees look at us as inherently evil.” Harsh? Perhaps. And often unfair (partially because of visibility - people notice when HR handles layoffs - but not when we fight to save jobs!) . However there are some common misconceptions behind it: 👿 HR is seen as the corporate "police." 👿 There’s a focus on compliance and process over understanding the business. 👿 Endless forms and lengthy employee policies. 👿 Mandatory, cumbersome processes. 👿 An inclination for telling you what you can’t do. It’s time to shift this perception. As HR professionals, we need to actively demonstrate the value we bring - not just to business leaders but to all stakeholders - and provide a tangible impact.
