At New Practice, they believe design has the power to transform communities. By listening, collaborating and championing local passion, they create spaces that truly belong to the people, like the Kinning Park Complex in Glasgow. We were delighted to take part in the Royal Town Planning Institute Scotland Annual Conference at Clydebank Town Hall yesterday! Our Head of Digital Place and Innovation, Ian Gilzean shared an update on the Place Tech Innovation Lab with Tom Sharples from The Scottish Government. Our Director of Design, Heather Claridge also sat on a panel to talk about #placemaking into the future. Thanks for having us!
A few shots from the RTPI Scotland annual conference at Clydebank Town Hall today (which also contains the museum, hence the beautiful ship replica). It was a day of talking about placemaking, its components and the challenges of planning 'liveable', sustainable and attractive places to live in 21st century Scotland. There was lots about patience - the patience to take the long view, the patience to wait for a return on investment. Lots about principle, particularly learning from the placemaking principles of Sir Patrick Geddes, who effectively laid the foundation of modern planning in Scotland. Plenty about participation and a fair bit on the possibilities presented by the evolution of digital technology within planning. We had good speakers, including the excellent Lord Best (who indulged me when I suggested that Westminster Palace ought to be repurposed as a museum of democracy, a university of civics and social housing) on the pettiness and pusillanimity of the profit motive; Irene Beautyman, Johanna Boyd and Heather Claridge, all of whom are always worth listening to; my mate Lindsey Richards FRTPI, of course, who chaired a session, and public finance minister Ivan McKee, among others. It was all ably hosted by Pamela Clifford and Caroline Brown. Some of you will know I'm a bit of a Scotophile - I mean, come on, it's the land of Kenny Dalglish and Clare Grogan, after all. Oh, and my other half. So I love to take every opportunity to visit. It was a whistle stop this time but like the big Austrian, I'll be back. I'd sign off with a bit of Scots, but that would leave me hanging on a shoogly peg with Elaine, so I'll just say good evening. #rtpi #rtpiscotland #townplanning #urbanplanning #placemaking #clydebank #patrickgeddes #conference #urbanism
