  • We’re excited to share that the Design Council has joined the newly relaunched Net Zero Council—a powerful collaboration between government, business, and civil society to drive the clean energy transition as part of the UK’s Plan for Growth. As our Chief Executive, Minnie Moll states: “Design has the power to cut across sectors, fuelling innovative thinking, embracing circular approaches, and turning the challenges of climate change into opportunities for economic growth, improved quality of life, and a cleaner, more sustainable future for all.” Design is a powerful tool in the creation of a cleaner, greener future. We look forward to working alongside fellow council members to turn ambition into action. Find out more: https://ow.ly/BmLr50UUFQz #NetZero #DesignForPlanet #CleanEnergy #Sustainability

The Chancellor’s speech today set out an ambitious vision for investment, infrastructure, and clean energy. But to truly deliver sustainable, thriving places, design must be given a place at the decision-making table. Here’s why:    ✅Design accelerates progress – Smarter, people-centred planning can speed up infrastructure delivery without compromising quality.  ✅ Design unlocks economic growth – Well-designed places attract investment, create jobs, and fuel innovation in AI, life sciences, and beyond.  ✅ Design drives sustainability – Regenerative cities, nature-positive housing, and future-proofed transport are all built on planet-first design thinking.  ✅ Design makes investment work harder – Every pound spent on infrastructure should deliver impact, efficiency, and lasting value.    We at the @Design Council are ready to work with government to make it happen.    #DesignForPlanet #NetZero #SustainableGrowth #Innovation

  • At the Design for Planet Festival 2024, we partnered with Stitch to deliver a festival that wasn’t just about sustainable design, it embodied it. The results speak for themselves: ✅ 96% of materials were circular-enabled, designed for reuse, regeneration, and remanufacturing. ✅ 3.7 tonnes of carbon offset, addressing unavoidable emissions. ✅ 492 hours of living-wage work for individuals impacted by homelessness. ✅ 4.7 academy places funded, training people from marginalised backgrounds to join the events industry. The festival’s reach was global, with over 5,000 registrations from 113 countries and 7.7k live views. Attendees increased their knowledge of sustainable design by 96.2% online. You can still catch up on all the talks here: https://ow.ly/hCmk50UM0wM This collaboration shows that events can lead with impact—environmentally, socially, and economically. Read more about it here: https://ow.ly/ZEev50UM0wL We can’t wait to work together on World Design Congress in September. #Sustainability #ESG #EventImpact #DesignForPlanet #CircularEconomy

Design as a Catalyst for Sustainable Transformation Sustainability is a design and innovation challenge and to address it effectively, businesses must take a reflective, holistic and challenging look at a very deep level to: 🌱 Understand the problem that sustainability poses (what they do, what their impacts are, and what are the implications of physical and transitional risks) 🌱 Create an ambitious vision of what success looks like by redefining sustainability as an opportunity to do better business  🌱 Create viable, feasible, desirable and flexible pathways to that vision (including the perspectives of all stakeholders and end-users) In SODA's latest Design Council Digest column, Design Council Expert Graeme Heyes Ph.D. argues that design, with its core competencies in creativity, problem framing, and stakeholder engagement, can play a crucial role in driving sustainable business transformation by helping organisations approach sustainability as an opportunity rather than a risk. • 🌟 Did you know? 🌟 Only 23% of designers in the UK identify as female, a figure that has increased by just 1% since 2015. Faye Toogood’s article in the Financial Times, highlights the importance of building pathways for women and marginalised communities to lead and thrive in design. It’s time to break barriers and reimagine the #DesignEconomy.
